    Prawn Migration

Think I remember reading somewhere that prawns come out of their little prawn houses and move down the river around the New Moon.
Is that correct? (or is it full moon, or is it just a general migration that starts at a certain time of year and goes on for a few months) I'm talking Northern NSW or SE Qld.
Just been hunting through various online sites to refresh my memory, but cant find it. Might have been in a magazine.
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

    Gday Jeff
Mate I'm fairly sure that they move out on the full moon in these parts. Not sure about more southern areas, when prawning around the bottom of nsw, we mainly chased them on the dark nights. As I said i'm not 100% sure on there exact movements though.

    Tony,
    Thanks for the reply.
Was just thinking of chasing some fresh bait when I get back, or to eat if they are big enough. Might be a bit too much like hard work with a bloody scoop net though.
Richmond river was full of little ones this time last year when we went fishing one night. Not 100% sure, but I don't remember it being moon lit.
Are they still around up your way in June?
Will have to pack the cast net.
    Cheers

Baffle creek has had prawns running virtually all year for the last couple. Roundhill on the other hand seems to stop producing them around april- mayish.

    Cheers Tony,
Sounds like I better put in some practice on the cast net.
All year round prawns sounds too good to be true. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I'm sure it is the New Moon ,.....
unbelieveable how a simple a or b question can get confusing ...

    Billo,
Yep, thats why I stuck the question up.
Read an article somewhere that explained it clearly, then since then I have seen other reports or coments that clouded things, and had me scratching my head wondering which it was.
Think the article was actually on livebaiting in rivers and was saying that when the prawns are running, this was an excellent live bait and would be more productive. Other baits start looking unnatural to the fish amongst the abundance of prawns, and frozen prawns look ridiculous beside all the fresh ones around. Might have been an estuary fishing book come to think of it, so I'll endeavour to check tonight if it hasn't migrated off to my wife's family's house.

Anyway, checked back on this summary I had been putting togther (in an attempt to summarise fish types, times of year, times of day or night, and preferred tides for all different types of fish) and I had nominated NM beside prawns. So I will that and endeavour to confirm it when back to aus soon.

Guess it depends on what part of the river you are talking about as well. Maybe they take 2 weeks to get from the upper reaches out to the mouth anyway, which would of course account for why some seem to say FM and others say NM.

    Thanks for your reply.
    Cheers
    Jeff
