squid fishing
hey, just wondering what were good spots to get decent squid around straddie, me and a mate usually get em around the bay at amity but they are never that big with an average size of about 15cm. just wondering if there are any prime spots where you can get some decent sized squid anywhere on the island...

Re: squid fishing
I've found at vicky pt and cleveland when the jetty was there the best time was with a light westerly and a full moon, still took my own light. maybe you should try with a wind that flattens and clears the water over there, oh by the way, have found chicken pellets a great help, they bring in the bait fish, followed by the squid.
cheers.

Re: squid fishing
yep had limited success with em, thing is you need a float and need to get the depth right and be prepared to lose em to bigger fish, thing is with a float the squid can feel the resistance, (my theory). I stick to the smaller pink yazuri, a little more expensive but have had the best success with them. Tried cheaper and larger and just did no good. Actually fisherman 02 bought a new yazuri not long ago and the weight is now inside the body, don't know how good he has done with it tho. On average down cleveland we would average 30 decent sized squid (arrow / calamari) and cuttlefish in 2hrs. Have seen cuttlefish at that old jetty you wouldnt want to hook up, damn monsters. Got me thinking now, might head of to vicki point tonight or tomorrow night if this cloud cover lifts and the westerlies come in. have a craving for a feed o fresh squid now ya bugger.
cheers

Re: squid fishing
your welcome. btw, i bought a headlamp, two coils of wire. attached the wire to the headlamp (high beam), cut a coke can in half and put over the electrodes on the headlamp and filled with resin. When the resin dried screwed a cup hook into it and attached a light rope. bought a Kmart trolley, had an old battery. Lower the headlamp into the water then attach wires to the battery. I had a large golden circle can with holes punched into it, some rocks for weight, filled it with chicken pellets and lowered it into the water. Works like a treat even under the yellow lights of a jetty
cheers
