Good luck in Sydney. Start by finding a good tackle shop and buying good gear for local conditions and some fishing magazines, even the old ones in second hand book shops.

I'm afraid Asians going fishing do not have a good reputation in Australia as some of them have taken everything they catch or gather to eat. most of our sport fishing is catch and release.

Maybe some of our Sydney members would be kind enough to point you in the right direction?

Have to agree with the first two posts - just don't take small fish, and only take enough fish for what you will reasonably use.

Make sure you know our legal size limits on the fish you will be trying to catch. If you catch something you don't know the legal size of, don't take it.

We have a very precious marine environment in Australia that too many people have used and abused. It's already been fished too much. These days, we have a lot of laws in place to try and make sure there are fish for the future. If you break these laws, you will be in a lot of trouble. You don't want that. The best thing you can do is enjoy the fishing resources we have here, but for the sake of future sustainability, don't abuse it.

I live in Brisbane myself, and we have different laws in Queensland to the laws in New South Wales. As a lot of the information you will see on this site is from Queensland fisherman, make sure you find out the correct New South Wales laws that will apply to you. Some examples are cast nets, drag nets, bait traps etc.

As Dug said, there will most probably be some southern (New South Wales) fisherman who could offer you some information. If not, search through the forums on this website - there's literally thousands of posts on every topic you will ever need to know.

    Cheers

    Ben
