    Sea Mullet & Poddy Mullet

    Hi

Can you clear something up for me.

The rules on Qld Fisheries website say that the minimum size for sea mullet is 30cm.

    http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/11416.html#limits

I have read/heard of people catching pody mullet for bait. I looked it up in The Australian Fisherman's Companion by Harold Vaughan and it tells me that poddy mullet is another (amongst others) name for sea mullet (mugil cephalus).

Are these the same species? If yes, are the baits being used 30cm plus. If no what species is a poddy mullet?

    Thanks

    Chris

I don't know about QLD but in N.S.W. you can keep a certain number of juvenile mullet as bait.

In NSW the law is over 30cm and UNDER 15cm you can keep.

so the poddy mullets that are LEGAL to use are under 15cm.

Not sure how many mullet between 15cm and 30 cm get used for live bait but i'm sure it is pretty wide spread.

It also raises the question of using Taylor for live bait. The legal size is 30cm but i'm sure plenty of fish under this size are used for live bait. One guy told me that if you use them for live bait under 30cm it is ok.

Not to sure he was right.

Taken from the NSW fisheries website

    Poddy mullet
The term "poddy" refers to the juvenile of a particular species. Poddy mullet are very popular with anglers for use as live bait, especially in estuaries and around river mouths for flathead and off the beach when targeting tailor and mulloway/jewfish. However, it is difficult to identify the various species of mullet, particularly when they are juveniles. As a result anglers may take any species of mullet, for use as live bait only, provided they are less than 15cm and the total number does not exceed 20.

And here is the link to sizes and bag limits

Remember this is NSW info. I can't tell you what the laws are in Queensland
