    spike?

g'day, been tryin to make a proper spike for killing fish! I haven't seen one before so not really sure how they are usually made! I have a piece of stainless steel rod aproximately 60 cm in length and maybe 5 mils in width! if I grind the end of this to a verysharp point will this be suitable? I think I heard Team_Mongo uses a spike. is this what is usually used?
    cheers all!

    Re: spike?

    Hi michael,

I use a spike or an iki spike as they're called. Mine is a commercial one, but all they are is stainless steel rod on a handle. The rod you've got is perfect, sharpen it up to the max and mount it on a solid handle so that about 15cm is showing.

I spike fish coz its humane and preserves the meat and stops the lactic acid building up, especially fish that i eat raw like tuna. Look for the soft spot on the head between the eyes when looking down. Drive the spike in a 45degrees, you'll feel a pop as you enter the brain cavity, and then move the spike from side to side.

If you really want to overboard, coz you've caught a 300lb yellowfin and are going to sell it to the japs, you can taniguchi it. This is where you stick a thick wire or nylon cord down the brainstem into the spinal cord and destoy the spinal cord. This way the fish becomes immediately paralysed and cant spoil the flesh through muscle spasm.

I've posted a couple of pics up. Post up your spike when you've finished.

    Cheers
    George

    Re: spike?

Whack it on the head with a mini baseball bat, some fish take longer than others.

    Re: spike?

I think nearly all fish (the ones you are going to cook at least) taste better bled.
So if I am keeping it , I cuts its throat and throw it straight into an ice slurry.

    Re: spike?

i like chickos explanation, but i cant afford a baseball bat so i just smack the back of the head against a rock LMAO!!!!

good idea about the spike though-might give it a try

    Team_mongo:
how do you get to sell your catch to Japs?
same goes for jewfish, i heard people catch em and then sell em to local restuarants?
    is that legal?
do you need a permit or something?

    cheers

    Re: spike?

    Saen,

It is very illegal, you need a pro fishing licence. Its was tongue in cheek.

The Japs look after the meat, and will kill it instanteously. They lift them up with gaffs to the head and mouth and put them on a foam mattress. They then use the iki spike which kills it but the fish can still spasm for several minutes which can ruin the meat on a $10 000 fish, so they then taniguchi, which stops this spasming. The heart will still be beating which makes bleeding easier, but they dont cut the membrane on the bottom of the gills which attaches to the body. they cut inside the gills to bleed it out, which makes the fish look better in the fish market.
