All jokes aside, that shit hurts like fark eh. Got stung up near Bundaberg a few years ago whilst camping/fishing there. Pain lasted for days and still had recurring spontaneous pains for about 2 weeks afterwards.

And yes, generally the rule is hot for sea venoms, cold for land venoms.

Still have a lump on my index finger from a cattie ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
Spike broke off in the finger once it hit bone ***OUCH***
Next morning the finger was nearly the size of my wrist.
Hospital... minor op to remove the spike, lotsa pain killers and anti biotics that took 3 weeks to clear out the infection.
That was nearly 10 years ago and the finger is still tender...

As far as eating catfish, sheeeeeesh, depends how hungry you are I suppose lol.

Pin em down with a long bladed knife through the head, then get the side cutters and cut off all three spines, then get your hook out and throw em back, too slimey and too much trouble to clean regardless of how they taste..
My old man used to nail their heads to a fence post, run a knife along them and pull the skin off with fencing pliers, but he was keen..

Nope nothing like that as soon as catty is spotted....get the snips or knife and cut the line!!! Rather take one minute to rig up then a day of pain!!!!

I'd have to agree that catties can put up a good fight. It's just frustrating when you think that you've hooked onto something decent and next thing you know you pull in a 50 or 60 something catty. You can tell when youve caught them because they don't shake their head vigorously like other fish do.

Cut off spines, fillet and skin, cut into thin stips, use as bait to catch other better fish.

Dont know about the ten ten year plan, but I can tell you about a 1 year plan.

Broke the barb off into the index finger many years ago, from what I remember there was lots and lot of pain and swelling involved, even did the doctor and xray thing. For the following months I could feel the sucker in the finger, tingling and all the other good things that come with vermin.

About a year later I was sitting at the desk at work squeasing the sore bit, then I pierced the skin thinking it was a splinter or something, and out comes the spike. Catch is from the other side of my finger...yer it worked it way through, why, I suppose because it can....

Got tagged by a cattie for the first time Wed, sympathise with all those prior. Only a small one and in the finger but the rest of my hand went out in sympathy. Did the hot water thing seemed to work OK still sore tho'.

recomended treatment for these stings is emersion in hot water<<<BANSHEE'S ADVICE FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE THAT HOT WATER AS A METHOD OF TREATMENT BE UTILIZED , is appropriate ...I'd hate to be in a situation without the St John's Manual , to prescribe treatment of ICE or Heat...envenomations are quite contrary in many respects...ouch!

A useful tip when stung, is to use the tell tale water from the outboard to relieve the pain if you have no other hot water around.

Hi all,
I wonder if their barbs are like stingrays? I got a nasty one off a ray a few years ago, one week before my wedding day! One of the toughest things apart from actually getting married was to walk down the aisle with a throbbing foot from the barb being stuck in there!
Horrible fact from the doctor was that due to the shape of the barb the more you move the area around, the more the barb wiggles into the wound.. Perhaps the catfish is a similar shape barb ?
Either way, I agree, cut the line, stuff mucking around with them for a sake of the hook !!

The catfish aren't really a barb but more so a serrated edged spike that just leaves you with a nasty wound when they've stuck you. Stingray spikes won't hurt as long afterwards as a catfish will though.
