Have been hit a few times myself, the antidote for the sting is in the fish, cut off its tail and rub the blood into the sting, Dont know why it works but it does, the blood neutralises what ever is in the sting. Learned that one when living in th US of A from catfish farmers there.

Kabe, that makes sense, I have never been hit by a Catfish, I have never bought one into the boat, when I catch them I cut the 3 main spikes off with a set of sidecutters before attempting to remove the hook. If the hook is right down in there then I just cut it off.
I'll have to remember this one if I ever get bitten by a croc, I could cut it tails off and drip the blood onto the stinging area. LOL.

    hardcorr,

Do you really think the hook is worth slipping your arm down the throat of a croc for ??

    Cheech-

Yes, they do eat the fresh water types-wouldn't do it myself-so here is a link about cleaning the things. http://members.aol.com/jackfish7/cleaning.html

I think it is Southern USA type dish.

Actually I would clean off the mud, cook the mud and throw away the fish.

    Hi Cheech.

The blue/fork-tailed/armour-plated catfish is excellent eating. The fillets are pretty small though, due to the armour plating extending down a good third of the body. If the fillets aren't skinned a "strong" taste is imaparted to the flesh, I eat 'em all the time.

My son was spiked at Awonga Dam within 10 minuets his throat was swelling and having trouble breathing got to shore emersed hand it hot water took an hour before he could leave it out of the hot water and swelling to go down
The rule is hot water for sea, cold for land

Catfish are good eating, believe it or not, even our saltwater types are pretty good table fair. You have to bleed them as soon as they come out of the water, I normally wip 2 fillets off them straight away and duump the carcase. If the fillet is taken off right behind pectoral fins its a boneless fillet, then skin it at your leisure. I normally dip in milk then plain flour and deep fry them.

Sea or Fresh .....or any toxic fish (bullrout, stonefish etc) use hot water as hot as the patient can stand with the uninjured limb. This treatment may take 30 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the amount of venom involved.

Yes, anaphylactic reactions can occur in people sensitive to the protien. With this in mind, good first aid always includes monitoring of the conscious state, airway, breathing and circulation.
