when Shane said that he topped up the tank with freshwater does he take any of the water out? Totally new to marine aquarium setup. With my freshwater setup last time I changed the water by taking out about 1/4 of the water in the tank and replacing them with roughly the same amount every 2 weeks.
Does this mean that the water in a marine setup evaporates quite a fair bit over time? My water in my old freshwater one didn't seem to evaporate at all.
Well no it wont dilute the salinity IF the water has evaporated, but yes if you take water out! I dont take water out all i need to do is clean the glass and live rock that you have in your tank acts as a filter as well. My tank is 6ft long 2 and half foot deep and 2ft wide....hold roughly 700 to 800 litres.....The bigger your tank is tgh less probs you have with a marine aquarium.......I highly reccommend you change from fresh to salt! Its easier to maintain and looks a hell of a lot better! One downside to a big tank is the amount of live rock you have to fill your tank with and at 10 bucks a kilo it soon adds up! The salt that doesnt evaporate will still be in the water as per usual not on the side like vertico mentioned!! I have some photos but in camera at present will post them in a few weeeks! Keep askin me ?????? if you need more info...i dont mind helping as this is the best way to learn!!
dude, i've kept bream flathead and whiting alive in a marine set up. just try to follow nature.remember where they all come from and duplicate the scene. lizards are among my best fish to keep in a tank. you must have a reef style filter. one that copies high tide and low tide. change some water every week, check ph and other impurites daily and water temp. i'm not fanatical but nature must be copied to your best. i have kept a flatie for two years in a 6ft tank. only had to let him go when he got tooo big.
What do you class a reef style filter!!! Easyrider you make it sound sooooo hard like all the other aquarium blokes!! Its simple yes keep an eye on your ph, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia but not daily thats for sure.....At first yes but monthly or weeekly is fine! I havent checked mine for two months and yet to lose a fish due to my fault! You dont need a sump to setup a marine aquarium either! Ive never changed my water i will do that yearly, however i do top ups when the water gets low!
I dont mean to sound disrespectful but theres so many people out there scared to give it a go because people keep sayin how hard it is when its completely the opposite!!
Cheers
My experience to date has involved keeping prawns alive in a warwick tub for a few weeks. Intended to use them as live bait, but got sort of attached to them so released them in the end!
What is live rock and what is a protein skimmer and can you give some indication as to costs for these.
Live rock is just rock from th ocean that has living organisms such as crabs, corals, good bacteria ect. However you cannot take from the ocean yourself unless you are liscenced!
A protein skimmer is like a filter, very easy setup it just blows loads of bubbles and skims your water for waste (ammonia) and deposits it in the top of the canister! Mine is a real cheapy ill have to upgrade for my size tank(oneday) But it has done the job so far. The cost of them range from about $12o to $1000 mine is $120.....
As for the prawns i know what you mean!! theres nothing better than a marine setup thats for sure!!
Cheers, anymore questions fire away i can answer most!!
Thanks for you reply. I think I saw a protein skimmer in a pet shop the other day, it had all these brown oozing bubbles in it.
You mean to say that the rocks I picked up across the road (bayside rock retaining wall) I should put back! They were only little, about the size of a tennis ball and the prawns seem to like being around them. I need a license for that.
ahahahahahhahahahahahaha now thats funny!!! Yeah mate thats the protein skimmer in action brown frothy foam on top of the canister....Can get all shapes and sizes even make your own!!
yeah bazzman and argo, sorry about my reply. but this is what i have
a 6foot tank set up with an eheim wet/dry filter, it simulates high/low tides within the filter to help get rid of nasties built up in the water. heated to around 27 deg, 2 substrate filters with power heads, large wooden air diffuser same end as filter return to circulate more o2 in the tank. 2 actinic blue coral lights, for good coral growth, and 2 grolux green lights for normal tank conditions.
besides checking my ph ,nitrites and salinity levels fortnightly i also change 1 third of the water every month. but i dont just use fresh water and then add salt.i use real salt water. collected about 2 kay outside botany bay. call me fanatical maybe, but have not had any problems with my tank yet.
inhabitants have been
humbugs, damsels, lion fish, clowns, banded shrimp, angels, catfish, bream, whiting, flathead, starfish, nudibranch's,sea cucumbers, sea urchins, large hermit crabs, blueswimmers, anenomies and some other little fisheis that were givin to me.
now i'm going to change all that to a fresh water tank. a friend has a trout tank set up. so i'm keen to have a go at that. same set up but need a small fridge to put filter in to.
sounds like a good setup you have there and yes a little fanatical than me! Thats a good thing though! That fridge will sure be less than what a chiller costs for a 6footer tank! Good thinkin 99!!
