Thread: Squid Jigging

    Re: Squid Jigging

    Smelly,

we usually start by getting a thumnail under the 'plastic' feather inside the tube, slide up to the top of the tube, then pull the 'feather' out with guts and tentacles attached. Keep this bit for bait, but lots of folk eat the tentacles too.
Then get thumbnail under one of the wings near the top and strip off from tube same with other wing, skin normally comes off with the wings. Move on to next one. When all done, turn them inside out (same technique as French letter demonstrator) and clean remaining muck off inside of tube. (Not everyone bothers with cleaning the inside).

I also keep the wings for bait but once again they are edible and some keep them to cook.
Always meant to try a guitar plectrum for cleaning them, especially to get under the 'feather', but haven't actually done it yet. The quick under your thumbnail gets a bit sore if you have a few to clean.

    Re: Squid Jigging

Hey Guys! My first and only experience at catching these yummy criters was during a house boat holiday with friends on the gold coast a few months back. We were anchored just out the back of marina mirage at southport on our last night, and I dangled an OLD HARD DRIED pillie in the drink on a set of 4/0 gangs. (Ok I was a tad dizzily) The water was lit up with the all lights from the marina etc and within 5 mins of just holdng the rod still, the line went taught and I pulled up a 30 - 40cm squid. I repeated the process about 5 or 6 times, until my pilchard soaked through, became sloppy and fell off.. I tried again with a fresh one, but no such luck! They were very easy to prepare, sliced up and lightly crumbed with mixed herbs and garlic, shallow fried in the pan for the yummiest post booze up munchies I have ever had!

    Re: Squid Jigging

Dont really go for squid but I went to Woody Point jetty the other week, bought my first ever Jig from the Bait/Tackle shop opposite, and went down the jetty and put it in the water cos it was getting dark.

Less than 1 minute later I had already caught one so it must be ok for squid there. ???

    Re: Squid Jigging

Call it determination or flat out crazy. Went Squid Jigging once and managed to get 2 squid. After 6 trips since i havent managed to hook another. I can see the buggers, they even follow the jig. I have tried all things mentioned in this post and read through that great web site olm8 kindly offered but still no luck. I am guessing this can be a common thing, just gets extrememly frustrating freezing till early hours of the morning and seeing the squid and not being able to hook up. I have been jigging the esplanard along the broadwater where the grand boat ramp is. Is there a better area near by to try that may be a little more fruitfull ?
    Cheers

    Re: Squid Jigging

    Smelly,

sometimes they are shy, other times times they fight each other to get on the jig. When the water is really clear they tend to be the shyest.

If you get a follow and they hang round instead of buzzing off, worth lifting the lure a foot or too(still in the water) and dropping it back a few times; every now and then this stirs them up. If this doesn't work worth pulling out and casting out behind them again and working the lure back to where they are(were). Sometimes they have a go the second time.
experiment a bit, you might invent the best way of fooling the little beggars. But there are times when they won't touch a lure, maybe they've already filled up on something.

    Re: Squid Jigging

Thanks Littlejim, yep i recon they can be very strange creatures to catch. Will try doing what you suggested next trip. The water is very clear at the moment so that may be a factor. I have been trying a few different things with little success. In fact a few times when i have seen them and get my jig to swim almost right upon them they scoot off, so i presume they just arent interested. Its like the jig scares them. Other times (last trip) i did have one that swam after it, so i stoped winding, it waited as did i, i got impatient so reeled in about 20cm's, stopped, the squid followed. This went on about 5 times and at the end i ran out of water to catch the bugger in... Arrh well, at least i know from what i have read that i am not doing something totally off the mark

    Cheers

    Re: Squid Jigging

    Hi guys

Might be cheating but I found that a bit of peeled prawn stuck amongst the spikes on the bottom of the jig works well as it is soft enough to push away and expose the points when the squid grabs it.

    Smelly,

when they are really good and on the take while my mate is casting and jigging, I just leave the lure near the boat and have a smoke(shame! cancer!etc.etc.) if they are really on the boil they come and hang round the non-moving lure and one will have a go, or else a bit of dropping and retreiving gets one.
Doesn't work if they are shy. Sometimes one will come up have a look, then like a kingie, buzz off at eleventy twelve miles an hour.

    Re: Squid Jigging

Sounds like fun, i have only jigged from the bank so far and usually just as a bit of fun, but would be heaps better if i'd get the odd one or two

Will keep at it and see how it goes

    Cheers

    Hello all,

Kinda new to the GC - been here for 2 years, I use to do a bit of squidding back in Syd and haven't had a chance up here yet,

Anyone got any areas in the Goldie to go jigging? any help appreciated.

    Thanks all

I have been doing a bit around the sundale bridge with some success. look for the water eddy around the rocks. all are of a good size.
