    Re: Squid Jigging

I caught 2 off the new jetty beside the Pilot boat mooring just inside the Mooloolaba harbour but then got moved on by a security guard so I guess they are about. They seem to like the clean water on a run in tide and a strong light so the public jetty on the south side next to the ramp could be worth a go.

    Do you have a boat?

    Re: Squid Jigging

What kind of jigs are you guys using, and what size do you prefer???? Prawn style, fish style?? There are lotsa yo-zuri style squid jigs. Most of the guys I talk to use a size 3.0.

If you're interested in some great prices, check out my site, will have new jigs in May 27th.

    Re: Squid Jigging

I use a cheap prawn jig, cloth covered in a range of colours.

they cost around $2 to $5 Australian so are disposable.

There are some new HUGE ones I am dying to try.

    Re: Squid Jigging

I have only been squid fishing once and was supprised by how fun it was. But the only thing that has really turned me off going again was the trouble i had 'attempting' to clean the buggers.

How do you guys clean them or how do you know when they are clean. I pulled the skin off them but started to go dark again.

Your advice will be much apprreciated as going to go again after a taylor trip this weekend.

    Cheers

I tried shorncliff jetty last night. I couldn,t get over the amount of people trying to catch squid there. I managed one failed hook up. I saw a few swimmimg around but they didn't seem interested.

Q- do you throw them out and retrieve them in or as I noticed many just dangled them from the jetty. But they didn't catch any.

you need to work a jig remo. if u see a squid chasing the jig stop, then slow retrieve if it isnt interested, the more u can tease the squid the better, they soon get agro enuff to attack them. best of luck

    Re: Squid Jigging

Know what you mean Remo. Did a little last night (from a boat) and had one hanging around about 2 metres from the boat in the light and just checking out the jig. I tried jigging, sitting still, up near the surface and then lower, still nothing. Then tried casting out again and retrieve again. That finally interested it. Attacked the lure but missed a positive hookup. Oh well.

After assessing my failure I realised I missed something that a senior member of this site said. Rub a pillie against it for scent. Maybe that could have made a difference? Have thought about using Garlic scent. May give that a go next time.

    Re: Squid Jigging

Cleaning squid I just put a cut through the skin near the wings and peel the skin off, then just turn the tube inside out.

the skin is quite thick not just the surface coating .
You should end up with a clean white tube Lots of water helps to clean the ink etc away.
