    ALGAE OUTBREAK

There is a outbreak of that brown choking algae at the mouth of lota and tungalpa creeeks. I fished there yesterday and the fish were scarse and the algae is chokeing.
I have tried to notify Authorites in the past as i fear it is the toxic algae but was given the run around about this .who is responsible in clean up and warning people of this. As i think this could be important.

    Cheers Dylan

I think you're talking about snot weed. There is a bit of it down the 'pin and also in the Pumicestone Passage at the moment. I think it is a seasonal thing and will clear as the water warms and we get some rain. The snot weed is not toxic if that is what you are talking about, but it does ake fishing difficult at times.

I think Jeremy's right on this Dylan. The same thing happened last year at approx the same time. The stuff I picked up at the Pin last week, I also picked up in the bay on Saturday. It appears (to me) to be a "die off", that is, the stuff seems to be in a state of decomposition as if it is a seasonal "dying back". If it is, then I would assume that it is likely all part of the eco system.

I think so Dylan. I forget the exact name of that stuff but I simply call it "red weed". The danger with any weed is that if it gets blown into a limited area and is then "becalmed", then, as it breaks down, it de-oxygenates the water. An over abundance of live weed can also cause problems during the hours of darkness as it isn't photosynthesising at night and this can also lead to de-oxygenating. I forget the *exact* processes but from my ailing memory of what I've learned in the past in regards to fishkeeping, and the fact that an over stocked fish tank (with live plants) can lead to problems, but I'm pretty sure that my simplification is on the button. I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong (but I doubt it) as most folk think that the more plant life the better and that it can *only* be beneficial.

    cheers
