Kev, I have a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft and the fan brings it down well. The fan will also slice the shark up just the right size to fry

yes i have a 6ft x 2.5 x 2 and no, two fans wouldnt cool it down and i guess it depends on how hot your room is in the first place......... ??? ??? ??? I wish it would....save me alot of money!!!

    Hi

I posted in this topic a few pages ago about setting up a simple small SW aquarium. Geez it has developed from there!

Sounds like there are a few people that have temp probs ie getting too hhot over summer. I saw a few hobbie farms when trekking about in North QLD last year and can say that for a hobbist/breeder with many tanks in 1 room or shed that a combination of A/C and water chiller is critical for SW aquaculture.

Due to the cost of installing and running this equipment, some people get away with good quality fans on the top of their tanks to blow the surface. Leaving the hoods up helps too but will aid evaporation!

Im in Brisbane and really dont see my 80L tank going above 30 even in summer! Barra can survive a nice temp range too!

    Good luck!

Coral is what will die before fish! I lost an excellent leather coral due to the heat but apart from that nothing else including fish....The fish seemed to be ok.......I only had clowns at the time but they were fine.....Air conditioner will be installed before next summer so no probs there ......As far as chillers go one for my size tank $1400......so ill just get an air con unit installed so i can benefit too! .......I tried many ways to cool it but a tank this size no chance!

Yeah Shane, all the damsels and clowns are tough little buggers. I think they've got nature's built in tolerance to temp fluctuations as they often live near to the surface on the reefs. I had a tank with nothing but anemone, tomato clowns and humbugs back in the UK and never lost a fish. If The clowns went off their feed that invariably indicated that the anemone was sick. You need to get those buggers out of there quick if they are, they go off pretty quickly once they die.

Luckily, working in the trade, I had access to an observation/quarantine tank that I could "hospitalise" my stuff in and also got my stuff at wholesale prices.......I could never have afforded it otherwise. Our stuff came from Singapore and Indonesia...to give you an idea of UK prices 9 years ago(that I can remember):

Blue Tang $240, Batfish $180, Occy (try keeping them buggers locked up) $160, dahlia anemone, $280. damsels and clowns only came in at around $100 each but as I said, that's 9 years ago.

I'm building an 8metre treble garage/den atm to house the boat and growing army of tackle so I am going to look at marine keeping again, although air conditioning is out of the question in a room that size.

    cheers

Cheers Bungie. I'm going for a bigger tank when the house is finished. As for the shark.......we call it "Buggie" as in Joe Bugner :-) It's always got it's face bashed in having broken two glass lids so far. I've discovered that if you walk past the tank in something red it goes absolutely spare and panicks like buggery......might be something to be learned in regards to fishing there, or else it's just plain cuckoo like it's keeper. On second thoughts, all the red shirts I own are England footy strips so there could be something else to be learned that has nothing to do with fishing :-)

    cheers

Yeah, all those newcomers to marine fishkeeping kept the retailers in a life of luxury. They couldn't wait to put fish in their new setups despite being told to wait.......couple of days later they're back asking why their fish died and shelling out for more. Plants were the big earner in freshwater with stuff such as vallisneria and wisteria coming from Singapore and costing out at 2pence a strand and selling for 15pence!.......sell 'em a crayfish, butterfish or scat and they'd be back in a couple of days asking where their plants went........not us selling of course....we were reputable :-)

    cheers
