I was fishing the surface the other evening when i got splashed from a talior strike right in front of me however this excitment was short lived as this was the only strike i recieved for the session. I was using a lively supa blupa and was wondering if anyone knows what surface lures work best on these aggressive fish.
i heard black poppers the dimension of a poddy. You can make them out of broom stick handles - there's an old bugger who tows them around black rock on a surf ski at night.
I have used pencil poppers and home made broomstick ones off the rocks but dont think they are as effective as Raiders etc. They certainly don't cast as far and a metal lure can work right near the surface as well as deeper. Off the beach I was suprised at how little distance i could cast them compared to a 65gm Raider.

I am also very interested in this topic, have heard you get big tailor with poppers however never had any luck myself. Any particular lures that are proven fish catchers would be really helpful, thanks guys. Sean
A lot of the blokes in this area use raiders, flasha spoons etc. One of the most popular are the Toby spoons (cheap as yesterdays chips ). These types of lures in my opinion, work so well I dont see the need to try anything else on the tailor.
I've no doubt that poppers do work in the right situation though, and there is nothing more exciting than a surface strike on a popper!
I have caught tailor in the surf at Fraser on unweighted pilchards realed slowly across the surface! spectacular! I look forward to doing that again one day. as for poppers, I have used fat-r's (I think), though unsuccessfully at this stage. I do know someone who has had success on these, in fact he removed the hooks to really have some fun.
I once picked up some Tailor on a small popper off Yeppoon's Iron Pot Island they were surface feeding and would not bite on anything else that I tried. I did not realize they traveled that far North, has any one else caught them any further north?
I have had some great tailor sessons on poppers around the north wall GC seaway and the Scotish Prince wreck.
I find that Diawa make a great popper around 80mm long and with a small cupped mouth. The best retreive using light 3kg spin gear was a constant medium pace skipping retreive and the old start stop. The Diawa doesn't make a big bloop like the large cupped face models. The black/silver model I used the most.
I caught around 30 tailor on every cast when my mate was jigging for livey's at the Prince wreck. It was the best fun ever as the tailor were doing acrobatics trying to nail the lure.
I put them all back however they would make good cobia baits.
After hearing of all the sand pumping jetty sucess I'm going to have to get out the spinn stick and have another go.
