What do you look for in a tailor gutter?

Hi guys, just wondering what other people like in a gutter when chasing big tailor, large back bank, small banks. do you fish on or over the bank or in the gutter itself. fav. baits and rigs you want to share? do you follow the moon? or like certain tides? just curious to how others target big tailor and there succes rate.

where are you fishing mate?I am guessing strtaddie or moreton.I find that deep gutters hold taylor but if theres taylor around i never muck around with baits just chrome lures.I have found them aggressive and throwing a 40 + raider will have good succes also its good to match the size of baitfish to the lure .If you get a good set of polarised sunnies and drive down the beach looking through the wave you will se taylor or dart for that matter thats how i fish!!

Mainly fish DI beaches and nossa north shore as well as straddie and moreton, yeah ive never had great succses with big tailor on lures i find them good for fish up to about 2 Kg but have found baits better for the larger fish from 2-5 Kg

    Hi Drew,
What I mostly look for in a tailor gutter is TAILOR.
If they are already in there you can see them when the waves stand up.
Otherwise I go for a steep bank slopeing down to as deep a gutter as I can find, you want a good bank out the back so most of the wave action is stopped out there.
Berley will attract and hold the tailor into your chosen gutter if they are around.

Am i right to say that most big tailor say around the 5 Kg mark are solo fish or in smaller schools of mabe a handful of fish. when i do spot tailor in the surf 80 percent of the time they are smaller fish, 1 - 2 Kg. the bigger ones ( for me ) seem to come from when ive selected a good gutter for the conditions, which i cant see fish in and wait for that lone big tailor to pass through. most times when ive spotted a big tailor in a wave hes the only one. any one else experince this? somtime i prefer not to be hauling in fish one after another as i know that a big fish may enter a drain or gutter first to sweep through it ahead of the smaller fish.

    seriously - I can't fish ...

but in my other life when fish feared me, the list would be ...

a change involving the southeast that makes fishing the gutter uncomfortable but not impossible - water with attitude (lot of lapping & slapping) but not a lot of sweep - the water inside swells & at times seems higher than your eyeline - it seems to have a pulse of it own - like the guttters alive

that purple blue almost black look with emerald green around the bank showing that there's bubbles in the shallow water but genuine depth in the gutter

one feature above all else - a clean entrance - tailor don't like sand in the gills - ideally waves that are rolling, folding & crumbling thru producing that emerald green "ambush" entrance before swelling inside the gutter

    or so i've heard - sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh #

as you know drew - i lack the runs this innings.

I normally choose a spot that has a nice bank so when the tide is half full there is suuficent clean water for the tailor to come over it i dont like fishing in the suck out as there is always to much run the less movement the better. the bank must have that emrald greeny dark colour over it where you can see the bubles and white water rolling cleanly over the bank and rising to the surface. if its possible i prefer to cast just over the bank to pick up the tailor as the come over it. if i cant reach it ill try to have my bait siiting on the bank. a strong sou wester is good i find it creates the white water well as it blows back against the waves, and i dont mind a light/ med fishable sou easter as well. throw in very dark night and thats what i like.

our biggest tailor don't keep gentlemans hours usually after 10pm on a making full moon - or on a making new moon / blackmoon (my boats name incidently) at very first light in the morning

my biggest 3.8kg a north straddie Frenchman's Bay beach fish caught in absolutley atrocious conditions - september is a favored month

Yep, prevously using 100 pound black magic but after lossing to many fish have gone to 59 pound nylon coated multistand have still been busted on this thinking of going to about 80 pound. or changing the leader after every couple of fish.

I was never fond of wire until one nights fishing up DI when i came across a gutter full of Big Big Tailor. never landed one was broken off about 20 times in one hour now i only use wire and still manage to catch big bream and dart when using it.

I look for the same sort of gutters with a deeper opening. I still have not cracked the old 10lb mark but am consistently catching more fish in the 2.5-3 kg sizes. I also spin a lot but look for the bit of whitewater and only pick up fish 1- 2kg in size.
I am intrested in what sort of wire and rigs you are using.

    Cheers Neil
