Without taking all the other indicators such as winds, rainfall, barometer, wife ect.into consideration than the best time for offshore fishing is leading to and on the full moon late july or early august. The tides are at their highest of all year and so the fish are in bunches doing the boy meets girl(spawning). After that it's about knowing where a good spawning ground is. This year the fish were so pleanty that in 1hr we all(but one) bagged out without the baits ever reaching bottom as the fish were high in the water.

so the whole new moon thing is a load of S*&T ...

The reason i ask is my dad has been told that and he beleives it ... he's sum1 whose always right ...

We were ment to go out with Sea Probe on the 18th, but i hav and exam on that day so cant make it ... <18th is 3 days after new moon> ... If we change the date and dont catch it will all be my fault coz it "isnt after the new moon" ...

I was pretty sure the new moon thing is a load of hog wash ...

there is only TWO good times to fish
    When it isn't rainning and
    when it is rainning
well that should cover all the times
is there really a time when it isn't a good time to fish???

Re: Whens The Best Time For Offshore Fishing?

As a general and very variable rule, on the new moon fish will bite during the day, and on the full moon the fish will bite on late afternoon into the evening.

Moon by day, fish by day; moon by night, fish by night.

I have found some truth to this, but like most others have said, the weather is really the main consideration when going offshore.

Weather is looking OK so far for this Sunday, so give it a go.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

I think you are being a little harsh. I went out 3 weeks ago and had the same experience. After an hour or so we bagged out on snapper and went home. That is only ten fish between two blokes. Not only is that legal, I believe it to be sustainable. If you have a problem with the bag limits adress your concern to DPI, don't criticise an angler for catching fish and actually sticking to bag limits.

Re: Whens The Best Time For Offshore Fishing?

    Cheers Rob,
Leo, I don't get close to fishing that productive everytime. I practice good catch and when needed, release methods. I only keep what I eat soon after capture, and on a day like that you tell me how many wouldn't take advantage of it. I don't think you meant harm but while the topics up, if most followed regulations of size and bag limits, followed protection zones and ensured all the small ones are properly released to at least grow to the maturity to spawn it wouldn't be such a problem. Finally, if you really don't like it than I recommend you take fish off your diet completely. You should see the amount the netters take in for consumers.

    Hi Ta ;-)

Mate, if I was to consider moon, tide, deckie's monthlies etc, I'd never get out.

Best phases/tides/weather (for me) invariably land when my deckie is working or the weather is crap.

I know you ain't got a rig but 125 bucks a trip can go a long way to helping you achieve that (if that's what you really want). My first (bought) rig, back in the UK was achieved by biting the bullet for 2 yrs and not going out with charters (used to go at least once a month) and giving up the ciggies. I also entered a few beach comps and raised a few bob there and put it about that I was available as a deckie. I actually got to deckie with a charter that I used to pay for :-)

If I'm ever in need of company, I'll give you a shout. Times a bit tight atm but next year should see me more available.

    cheers

    kev

    PS........hope you like shovellies ;-)
