Jew Advice/Help
Gday all
Over the past few months my interest in beach fishing has increased dramatically, and currently i would have to say it is the type of fishing that i am enjoying the most. On that note i am wanting to take it a step further and spend some lonely nights on the beaches or headlands chasing some jew. My current beach setup is great for bream, whiting, flatties, dart, and tailor with a bit of patience but too light for fishing for bigger species.
So im up for a new more gutsy beach setup, which is my first question. Can anyone offer me some advice in this area??
Secondly can anyone recommend any spots to try for jew within a few hours drive either side of brisbane??
Thirdly what rigs, line class/type, bait is the best for chasing these fish? (other than beach worms)
And last of all are there specific seasons, tides and moons that are most productive for this??
I know im asking alot from a single post, but any information that could be shared with me at all would be most appreciated . Hopefully down the track i can show some posts with some big jew taken.
Cheers

Mate, I'm no expert but I'll tell you what I know. I use a Gary Howard Greenback surf rod. It has a big Alvey on it with 30 lb mono. Could probably get away with a bit less off the beach, but off the rocks you may need all of those 30 lbs. New braid type lines are good but the lack of stretch may cause a problem if you get a big fish close in. Apparently the sand tends to wear them a bit too. I use 80 lb leader, sometimes 50 lb. Large live bait hooks, 6/0 - 8/0 depending on bait. I have them on a sliding snell. This allows you to adjust them to the size of the bait. I usually use star sinkers on a running dropper about 10 cm in length.
You need to try get fresh bait. Tailor, Mullett squid are all great, but need to be fresh. Frozen stuff just doesn't work as well. Luderick are also very good if you can get them, and I've been told that live bream account for a few Jew up around Noosa. If you have to use frozen bait then bonito would be worth a go and probably mullett. At least you may get a big tailor.
Locations. Well this is the hard part. If you have a 4x4 then the Straddies and Moreton and Noosa North Shore are the go. If not, well it is a bit harder. The Noosa National Park is a good area, especially the Fairy Pools and Hells Gates. But I wouldn't walk in there by yourself at night. Otherwise, a few Jew are taken off the sunny coast beaches, but as far as I can tell not too many. Pretty hard to find deep gutters. Having said that, there are not many folks targetting Jewies off the beach up there. I ussually have the beach to myself when fishing at night anywhere between Castaways and Sunshine. There are probably more Jews to be caught South of Brisbane. This is due to the large river systems. Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond, Clarence to name a few. Best time is after major rain in the gutters near the river mouths. Most Jew are caught in QLD over the colder months as they follow the mullett and Tailor schools. Down South (Sydney) they get them over summer.
Having said all of this, I've never caught one so it could all be crap. Only really started targetting them over the last 6 months. Good article in Saltwatrer Fishing mag this month about beach fishing for Jew.

I was about to post the same thing ...
I am stuck on land myself ... I often fish the sand pumping jetty, i'v had 2 jewie runs off the jetty, but never landed one ... Both runs were with Live tailor as bait <35cm+>
I'd go for a nice surf rod, something with a far bit of guts down low and 25-30Lb line class ... a nice big spinning reel, something that holds a decent ammount of line and a good drag on it ...
Im from the southside of brissy, if u ever need some company let me know mate ... Im thinkin about trying Narrowneck go down a little early on Low tide and pick some gutters ...
I hope some of u fellas with some more experience reply ... I'd love to land a nice jewie ...
Ta ...
