    game fish recapture

though it might be of some interest to a few.
i got a letter from the NSW fisheries this evening informing me of a black marlin i caught being re captured.

the fish was tagged at mooloolaba 18m and re caught by a long liner 30 days later 90nm east of bundaberg. the fish had travelled 106nm NNE.

i am stoked!! hopefully the fish was re released and in good condition after being on the long line.

another note guys- the crimp pulled on this fish after we tagged it... so it had a 10/0 SL12 left in. i am very relieved to see that it obviously hasnt effected the fish for long.
and yeah dave i will be displaying the letter for all to see... my pride and joy ATM

    Re: game fish recapture

Congratulations Jeff, It's a nice thing to tag a fish, but it oh so much sweeter to have it recaptured
Pity it wasn't at liberty a bit longer as I fear for it's safety after being dragged aboard a Longliner

    Regards
    Craig.

    Re: game fish recapture

thanks craig. i have tagged a few hundred fish in the maroochy river a few years ago and had 10 or so recaptured (one i caught myself) but the marlin has given a much greater sense of satisfaction

Im surprised that the longliners actually acknowlaged and told some1 of the recaptured fish, This is a step forward i guess

    Re: game fish recapture

Im pretty sure that longliners are not usually licenced to keep blacks an d stripes but the chances of it being alive when draged onboard, and then released are slim.

My mate who has been an observer on many longliners off mooloooaba says all the blacks go back in and sink to the depths and many other fish landed are usually dead or close to it.

    What a waste!

    Re: game fish recapture

long liners are aloud to keep stripes.
they actually thought it was a blue at the time.

They work the Seamounts around 100Nm offshore. At times they do come in close to the shelf and shelf canyons.
