    Foxy catching lots of Reds

Thought id put in a report and let people know of my fishing past. Many people bag pro fishers and in some cases they are well within there rights to do so. And the same can be said of rec fishers as well.I worked as a pro up until just recently and because of new restrictions ive pulled the pin.
the species we targeted were mainly the red emperor, large mouth nanagui and most of the coral reef species. We fished country well offshore usually to far out for rec fishernan to venture.
line fishing with deck winches we could expect to catch from 2000 lb to 3500lb a trip, of which half maybe our target species, now many would realize this amounts to good money.
Under new restrictions and quota system the licience i was using was roughly reduced to a third of our yearly catch history.eg 21tonne a year reduced to 7 tonne. The solution was either purchase 2 more liciences (250 000 dollars) or pull the pin and sellup. The other introduced problem is the fact id have to ring the fisheries before leaving to fish and ring them again an hour before i get back to shore and report the species i caught and exactelly how many of each, one fish wrong and your fined. Can any of you honestly say that threw all the kaos of pulling fish rough weather etc you could count several thousand pound of fish of maybe 20 different species. So what to do? well ive desided to go rec fishing.
Less paper work, stress and i only have to count to 5 reds. And for those of you that might think we fished that country out well since the mid 90s till now we havnt even scratched it.
Any way ive met some top blokes on ausfish hope to meet some more...foxy first pick the boat

    Thanks for sharing Foxy.
Bummer about having to cash in your trade but I hope you enjoy the future. Nice to hear the comment about not having scratched the surface yet. I'm all for (and I'm sure we all are) a sustainable industry for all and sustainable rec fishing as well.

One day I hope to catch one of those reds but its unlikely I will cause any serious damage on the fish stocks.
