I always carry small grapplin hook when prawning. it has saved my nets a few times. Get the biggest net you can lift/throw.
I currently have 4 nets(2 had to be reduced to cover the rules >) and only 1 has a bottom pocket as well as top. It does have its uses in really shallow work.
As for the floor, removable carpet & self draining deck-kick scuppers open and a bucket of water -beautiful
tip- after washed leave net soaking in fabric softner, before drying

If I am feeling lazy I can normally catch a good feed with a twenty at the co op or a couple of hours with a castnet chasing the prawns in the bay when they are on usually gets a bucket. Less snags than up the creek.
I think you got all the advice you need for prawning cast nets, scoop nets, deep holes, gutters, shallow mud,run out tides and the one thing that is always a definate your boat will get fairly dirty but your stomach should get satisfied
I have question regarding the legallity of netting with another type of net to catch prawns, and perhaps it should warrant a separate posting.
In Queensland I have always used a cast net, but since I have been overseas and have been north sea shrimp fishing (in a mud gutter on the runout tide) with a harness pulled sledge net, I am wondering if such a thing is legal here in Queensland?
This type of net was very successful - we netted tens of kilos of shrimp (north sea crabben), very quickly. This was then sorted through with other gear. We ended up with ~40 kilo of shrimp using 4 of these sleds for around 2 hours of work.
I have included a hand drawn picture of the net. It measured about 1.40 m wide, made of stainless steel metal. Not higher than 25cm for the mouth, with a ~8 mm(?) mesh and catch pocket at the back. The weight of the mouth ensured that the sleds sat on the bottom.
would something like this be permissible?
BTW it was very odd seeing sea lions popping their head up and watching you. Don't think it's a croc territory thing to do.
