It was Bill Corten that found the guys & their boat in the water .
It was reported by Nuggett on the 4BC fishing show , that when Bill came across them one of the guys was in a pretty bad way . Luckily Bill had a Doctor on board who was going out on a training course .

i have have made up my mind to do the bar crossing course with Bill Corten on the 30th oct looking forward to it
I have heard & read about story's on the south passge bar it can be really tough to cross & can be easy ( depends on the weather ) so i am taking no chance's i think its not worth risking a boat which cost a lot of money (too many days in the sun to earn money again ) for three hundred thirty dollars think its worth it ( doing bar crossing course )so i have read & heard good reports about Bill which will give me confidence to cross it

Is there a course on bar crossings?
I have been out over noosa a few times as a passenger but never as a skipper. I also do not know anyone that has done any crossings as a skipper. That said would like next winter to start going offshore to try get some decent fish (havent found them in the bay)or are there any volenteers to take newbies offshore and teach them the SAFEway to approach barcrossings? 8) Feel free to message me with advice or offers. Mrs ynot is probably as keen or keener to come too!!!!!!!

There is a great video out , its advertised in the Busn N Beach, on bar crossing. Great instructional stuff from small to large boats, and what to expect.

I have a copy of the video done by the Aust Boating College Maroochydore.
I thought it was OK, bit basic. But nothing beats hands on experience.

there's a book called "rough water power boating" i think its a must read! chapmans is also a great book to have although it more about all forms of boating then power craft alone.

Interesting read, been crossing bars for a while now, yet to cross south passage. I must admit i'm pretty loopy when crossing bars, bit of a "if in doubt, hit the throttle and hold the fuk on" , but i guess that will change when i'm an old dude. it is really quite amazing how safely u can get a small tinnie through a bar that would scare the pants off a beginner. I started with the seaway (bloody easy most days) then moved to tweed (can be a friggin nightmare), then hit mooloolaba (if u call that a bar) , aslo been thourgh caloundra (very very shallow, lucky i had a good day).

I would have to say power is the key, so at the moment when u go "oh crap i want out of here " you have more than enough power to do it.

Like i prosmise give a report on the Bar Crossing Course i did it last sunday 31/10/04 over the South Passage Bar .
I didn't realise the South Pasage is big bar its 7km long & 2km wide and had 3 channels to cross it & learn about pressure waves (i never cross it before ).
Bill is a top bloke at first i was a bit nervous by the end of the day i felt pretty confindent to cross the Bar by myself & and then sea conditions keep changing all the time which was good, Bill full of knowlegde of the South Passage Bar which put my mind at ease .
Now i can see the difference between the 2 stroke and 4 stroke the 2 stroke was more responsive had to be get out over the waves .
i give Bill Corten the [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] for the Bar Crossing Course to it was like doing Defence Driving Course but on the water instead for $330 its like an insurance policy & well worth it ( thinking about doing the offshore fishing course ) i would recommend the course to anyone that has cross the bar before or needs to know more about the South Passage Bar.
The Cruise Craft Outsider with 200 2 stroke hp was rellay nice to drive ( maybe one day have one these boats i just keep dreaming ) well hope to head over the South Passage Bar real soon in my own boat and get out there fishing catch an offshore snapper

How do you make that comparison, imo its nonsense, ive tiller steered a 40hp 4 stroke out there hundreds of times, been over plenty of waves
