A livey fished with 2 smallish trebles, one in nose and one in tail. Hooks joined by light single strand wire, with another foot of same wire to swivel. Fished about 8 foot under a baloon. Fished around the bait school were you got your bait. Works like a charm on spanish mac's early in the year.

bait bouncing off the bottom might work for schoolies, but there are better ways of catching spanish and spotties.

I like to troll a livie rigged with 2 hooks on wire (ANSA doesn't permit trebles in baits) and a pilchard rigged with wire on gang hooks. Or if anchored, a livie under a balloon and an unweighted pilchard rigged with wire on gang hooks. Throwing BPs can be very effective on the spotties when they are around in numbers.

haywire twist - pretty easy to do following the instructions on the back of the packs. Just try to keep it nice and tight with an equal angle on both the ends you are twisting.

For spanish I use nothing but wolf hering. 5 ten o hooks all tied together which are placed down inside the fish where they cant be seen. Weight at the front and then a squiddy to hide the weight. Trolled at a slow speed they cannot be beaten and are a guaranteed a fish everytime. however it is a difficult job to get the things to swim properly and if you dont do it properly they will spin and the spanish wont touch them. Bit of practice you will get it right. I make all my own leaders with nylon leader which I twist and burn and I usually leave about a metre of trace because I have seen spanish whip line with its tail and cut the line so I use a lot of leader.

As for spotties and other types I often troll spoons (oldie but a goodie) with plenty of leader. For a bait rig not trolling gang hooks with a good leader. If they are picky I will often use no weight and float them down as this works a treat. If they are on the chew I crank good sized bumper bar lures off the bottom or just lift them and let them fall.

I find those already made up traces are pretty crap and that making your own trace is much better, cheaper to because you can simply crimp them or twist them and melt the nylon together.

If you dont want to use the nylon and want to use wire I do a simple clove hitch and then a tight twist. But I have never lost a fish on twisting and melting the nylon.

    Good luck
