Poona - Great Sandy Straits

I'm going to Poona for 3 weeks over xmas. Does anyone know about the fishging and crabbingthere?
What am I likely to catch? Do I need any special gear?
Am I likely to get a feed of sqid?

i have never fished poona but i have fished kauri creek which is about 15 km by car from there. Normally catch whiting, flathead, bream, od jack & od trevally, take your pots the od muddy is around at the moment. Kleiny

Beware the boat ramp (tides).
Good fishing, can be excellent. It all depends on what you want chase, macks, jack, whiting, barra (top of Kauri). Good crabbng up stony creek. I'm with kleiny, Ive mainly fished kauri and Fraser side of the straits. Lots of toothy critters. Just north of the mouth of Kauri around an island is a little creek which we've had some bloody good jack sessions (dont get caught in there, can shallow up pretty quick and its a long wait. Don't dismiss the barra though. It is worth a go up Kauri true as far as you can. Odd rock bar.

Access at low tide a problem in most areas on the Great Sandy Straits but its pretty simple to work your tides.Stinky brad is right it's a great sightseeing area with clear waters, birds, sharks, turtles, dugong, dolphins and quite a few sea snakes. Depending on weather, the straits can get nasty for small boats with wind and tides heading in opposite directions, fishing options are near endless. Here's a list of fish I or my mates have encountered.Cod, grunter, parrot, jack, moses perch, jew, sharks, squid, tailor, tuna, mackerell, mowong, squire, threadfin, bream, flathead 3 species,both whiting, mud and sand crabs, wolf herring and sea pike just for a bit of fun. Even the odd barra can be found in the straits not by me yet unfortunately.Schools of bait fish and yabby banks all over. I suggest you go and just look around, so much water and places to see, at high tide on the western side of Fraser is a great place to explore or just go swimming. So as you can see I don't like the place much at all.
