    FAD off mooloolaba

I believe there is a FAD about 20mile out east from mooloolaba, is this correct & if so does anybody have the GPS marks.

please fish the FAD sensibly!! the sunshine coast game fishing club funded (with a little help from a few sponsors). it is holding good numbers of mahi mahi at the moment. please take only what you need for a feed (not much chop frozen).

the fluro work shirt has been on it since day one. so no one hits it. if the fad proves itself and people fish it conservativly then there is plans for more FAD's in the near future.

I know a FAD is a "Fish Attracting Device"

But what exactly are they constructed from?? Do they have any baits, or berly, or something to attract the predators??

it only has to be a searies of floats to attract fish or simialar things like a 44 gallon drum

    Re: FAD off mooloolaba

the scgfc fad off mooloolaba is a former waverider bouy donated by qgfa. its a sphere probably only haf a metre in diameter with a pole on top and as spiro said, a construction jacket. Its moored by a big pick and some man sized chain and poly rope. In hindsight it proably shouldnt have been poly, as it floats. One of the club members found out the hard way fouling up his prop and having to get towed home!

As jeffo said, please respect this fad, as alot of effort from a few of the club members has gone into it, and its an awesome addition to fishing out of mooloolaba.

I just wish I had a big enough boat to go that far offshore.

Maybe santa will bring me one for Christmas.

Jeffo i saw a fella with marlin lures on trolling them on Monday. Have you done it around there. I'm not after them just interested. A dolphin fish a trip would be good.

Spiro, the marlin just follow the bait around, when that fad first went in there was a story of a 150kg black jumping on a line thrown near it. if all dolphin were the size of that ripper you got the other day 1 would be fine but they norm just rats to about 90cm, they make ok eating fresh, but the bigger fish are far superior to the rats on a plate, quiet an unusual fact as most fish are the other way around!

How do they decide where to put the FAD?

    Re: FAD off mooloolaba

I've done a bit of research now.

FAD's can be anything purposfully placed in the water to attract fish. Anything from, a bunch of palm fronds (islanders), to a scuttled ship.

Some aren't even fixed (anchored) in position and have tracking devices relaying their positions to commercial fishermen.

Aparently the commercial fishermen are pushing big time to get more in place.

CAMH the mark is a little patch of reef at the bottom edge of the banks. need reef to anchor it on.. and keeps it away from areas where trawlers will pick it up.
