    Re: Poona

mate, love the place! beach fishing used to be good in the old days, incoming tide esp, high tide is good but forget runout or low tide on the beach. haven't spent much time up there in past few yrs, but locals say increased commercial netting has wiped out most of the good fishing. too bad you havent got a boat, as the boys on your other post say, boat-fishing is great, plus plenty of sight seeing!

there are heaps of access (dirt/sand) roads to poona creek, on both sides of creek (some 4wd only depending on weather). popular spot - take the turnoff just south of Poona Creek bridge (off Cooloola Coast Hwy) & follow till u see o/head pwr lines crossing the creek. you will cross a cattle grid or two. from memory take the right of first fork in road & left at next. head for the power lines & you will come to an 'unofficial' camping ground right on the creek. (sorry, hard to explain better, ) good for swimming & kids too with a few beaches. creek is fairly deep in places (20ft). several good spots from Poona road side too. in poona creek u can catch jacks, lizards, cod, perch, gar, alligator gar, bream, whiting plus more...

also check out Tuan creeks (north) & Tinnanbar (south) from which you can get to Kauri creek. at low tide wading the Tuan inlet is great, as all the fish have to drop off the flats into the main (narrow) channel, baitfishing & lure/plastic casting. at Tuan u used to be able to hire tinnies, not sure now though. poona boat hire shut down a few years ago.

PS. on the poona road u will see a 'Jew Hole' sign. if u don't get lost finding it u won't catch any decent fish there, so don't bother (at least i haven't, but somebody must have named it for a reason i suppose!!)

    cheers
    Brendon
