Are The big ones out their?

    Hi all,
Just after a little advice. Im new to fishing in the Morton Bay area and am after a little local knowledge. I have been fishing as much as the weather permits of late and only seem to pull up undersize squire. Are their any bigger fish in the bay???

    Gday Wezza,

There are big fish in the bay and if you read through some of the previous posts in the Fishing Reports posts you will get a few hints. Not too many people will give away their prize spots as next time you go yourself you wont be able to get onto them.

You already mentioed that you are getting undersized Squire so at least you are in the right area generally. I haven't done much fishing for Snapper/Squire but on the eastern side of Mud Island there are a couple of good spots. Check the charts of the area and you will probably be able to work them out for yourself. Also around the Harry Atkinson artificial you will get some (If you can find a spot to fish) although probably better to try in the Rous Channel.

    Thanks Rowdy,
I have been trying in those exact spots but am having no luck. Maybe I will give Rous a go. I have a few marks but they dont seem to be producing. Maybe lady luck just aint shinning my way. Thanks.

    wezza,

have a good long look at the bait you are using & how you are fishing it (how fresh, time of year, how much weight) - bigger fish are naturally wary because selection has weeded out the uncautious ones.

There are plenty of big fish still in the Bay, but they will take a bit of finding as, if you're a fish, you don't get big by being stupid. If you want to find Harry's, head for the Rouse and look right when you're about 2.5kms away and you should see the hoards of boats. Check your baits, seasons, tides, moons, rigs, methods, etc., and keep plugging away and, when it all comes together, it will have all been well worth the effort.

    Cheers,
    NICK.

:-) I'll be scaling down in future. The back's been buggered for over two weeks now, since that devil ray! Haven't even been able to fish the Pine :-(

Wezza, if you get bored and just want some (any) action, put a *big* fresh squid within 50 metres of the top end of Chain Bank (opposite side to Harry's) just as the tide starts to run (low or high), and hold on! :-)

There's some big estuary cod in the bay as well, but most folk seem to target the snapper. Just started fishing the Northern end myself, and the old gut tells me that it's promising so watch this space! :-)

I takes a lot of experience and trial and error to catch a big fish - or luck in some instances - eventually you will catch the big ones I reakon. It will test your skills though - so as the big one doesn't get away.

    Regards

    Chris
