Re: amity cod
On the subject of releasing cod etc,
Just had these release weights made up.
The idea I beleive was first used to return the big dewfish in west aus.
The theory is that you hook the weight thru the bottom jaw and allow the weight to take the fish back to the bottom where it should recompress without the need for crude surgery. It won't work everytime, as sometimes the damage to eye's etc can permanently effect nerves etc.
If it helps to return even a small percentage of these unwanted fish unharmed, then in my book it is definately worth a go.
I am currently helping the DPI with release statistics, to try to find the best method of release using both 16 guage syringes and the release weights.
Re-captures of the tagged fish should slowly start to paint a picture on what is the best method. I will keep you all informed on the results.

Re: amity cod
Nott so
The fish is released from the weight once it gets back to the bottom.
On the bottom weight you can see a crimp at the topof the bend in the hook, and a swivel behind it. A length of strong cord on a handline is attached to the swivel. Once the fish is back to the bottom, you pull and jiggle the cord and the swivel goes to the top of the bend behind the crimp and the weight is pulled out of the jaw. The hook is stainless steel and the barb has been ground off.
