There was this ladyb in the innisfail rag one day with a photo of a barra 130cm long caught on a set line behind a caravan park front page news and they where praising he rfor 1 almighty catch wich is bull sh## because everything she done to get the fish was ellegal
its a shame that there are bokes around that get a buzz out of popping 'big slow and any fool could hit' type of fish while spearfishing. he probably gave it a pat before putting a spear through the top of its head.
Hey Mack
I caught a QLD grouper on the 35's in 2002 and it was a complete fluke, i was really upset that i couldnt release it as it was dead at the surface (swim bladder issues). It looks very similar to the one in that pic however the colouration seems to fade in larger specimens and mine was quite dull.
After a quick photo on the beach at reeders i dissected nearly 1 kg of lead sinkers and about 12 hooks from his guts. I really should never caught this HUGE animal on 15kg bottom basher but he was hooked in the lip. I also removed his otoliths and had them aged at nearly 75yo and we estimated his weight at about 80kg!
I'll never post the pics anywhere as it was such a shame that he died..
Mick, there are quiet a few in the deep water off brissy, I dont think the qld gropers go that deep, they are pretty well all black cod from the digging ive done, ive had my share of disappointments in releasing big cod the best bet in water over 30m is to simply bust the line they have bugger all chance even following the swim bladder popping methods. it would be interesting to see the pics might help with future identifications. this is one of the cod ive pulled up out there, it was in the order of 60kg by my estimation, not the best pic but its head was huge. the fins have none of the yellow mottled markings of the qld gropers.
