    marine radios

    i am wanding what is the difference between VHF & UHF and how come we use VHF for marine operations not UHF ( i don't know the difference between the two ).
    While on the subject of marine radio's which is a better VHF brand models GME X600 or NAVMAN 7000,7200 ?

    UHF is loooong range, VHF's range is about 20 miles from a small ship

    VHF is a lot cheaper than a UHF set

    UHF requires extra licence class

    I have the Navman 7200, but it doesn't mean its better than the other, I just liked it

    Bungie, I think you might be getting confused with HF. HF sets are the more complex and expensive ones.

    Redspeckle, UHF is mainly used for things like CBs and also one of the amateur radio bands.

    Why is VHF used for marine - combination of spectrum rules, size/complexity of equiment, technicalities of the frequencies involved. It's a good compromise between the range of the signal and the simplicity of the equipment.

    As for the brands, I think any of the major manufacturers are ok - GME, Navman, Uniden. Just stick to a well known brand and you should be fine.
