    Howto catch bream/ mangrove jack?

    Hey guys...,,

Any good tips to catch bream/mangrove jack with softplastics/ hard lures, do you use a weighted lure or just cast out with the lure on line only. SLow retrieve or fast retrieve or sleeper line allowed tomove witht the tide, to mimic live bait??? Advice would be much appreciated...thanks.

I think most fisherman have actualy caught a bream before they even know how to fish. Might be better to use baits until you can find some spots in your area that hold fish, then experiment with lures and speed of retrieval.
As for the Jacks, I prefer to use baits before lures any day. A live prawn is my favourite. This will make the Jack find you instead of you having to find the jack.

Slabs of mullet oir fresh mullet is the best for jacks. Find the smallest creek (2 metres wide) with the most sandflies with heaps of mangroves and you will find jacks. Burley is also a must.

If you are down south brisbane style fish the bridges in nerang river at night with live mullet and you will ctahc some snodger jacks

Not sure with the bream, but I prefer to fish the 2 hours each side of the low tide for the Jacks, near tiny little creeks that flow dry on a low tide. Places that bait fish have got no choice but enter into the main creek or river, after the little creeks they live up on a high tide dry out on a low tide. I think I could of explained that better, do you know what I mean Mini?

prefer lures myself, but you need to fish with a lure or soft plastic freindly outfit, and yes you have to track the fish down, this is where the hunting part of the fun comes into the agenda...Let me know what outfit you are using ..eg ..rod ,reel, line etc...

for bream, jsut get some bread, throw it out, wait till some come and take it, then use a small hook with some bread on it on a float and cast it out amongst the rest of your bread pieces and wait. Often you will miss hook-ups because the hook is small but it's easy to put in a bit more bread and keep on fishing. Always have some bread pieces in the water while ur fishing. it'll keep em there. Biggest bream caught on bread went about 38cm or so. No exact measurement.

    Hope this helps, Sergio

2" ATOMIC FAT GRUBS,pumpkinseed, motoroil, amber being the perfered colours for me..Fish em with a 1/16 jig head..Try jigging them around pylons etc or slow roll them across the bottom...You will get more action/feel out of them if you use a nice crisp graphite rod and some thermo-dyneema line... 8)

    Amk for jacks
Fish the last half of the run out tide or on the top of the tide when the water goes slack. Look for areas that the jacks can use as ambush points, such as where little run out creeks enter the main creek. Try and find some good cover in association with the above, snags, undercut banks, logs etc.
Lately we have been using the snapbacks with great success. We have caught them on a few different colors, one of the best performers has been the "red shad" color.
The theory behind the success of this color is that the jacks are hitting it out of a territorial response rather than a feeding responce. Seems to be working well. The snapbacks are a boyant lure and we use a pro select style hook and mold some of the sticky weight putty on the hook shank and make them close to neutral boyancy.
With this system we cast slightly past the snag or structure and then with asharp downward jerk of the rod, you can get the lure down about 3-4ft and then "twidge" the lure to get the strike.
Another point worth noting is that rock or rock bars tend to hold more jack than snags do in many cases,
Cant help you with the bream, don't fish for them myself other than an occasional soft plastic attack.

    Regards, Tony

Usually fish a couple of hours either side of the low tide, the fish tend to hole up deep in the snags so don't be afraid to punch your lure right in there. I've always had good success with with C-lures jack-snacks or barra-pros in gold or red/bronze type colours. Fish with fireline or similair and a heavy drag because they take some stopping!
