Thread: Trolling For Spotties

    Re: Trolling For Spotties

I've always had good success trolling lures like rapala CD-14s in something like a bleeding mullet or blue mackeral. Last time we did some trolling here on the sunnie coast I was the only one using lures, everyone else used skirted pillies and I was the only one pulling fish. Also make sure you've got a high speed spin outfit on board, can have some serious fun throwing slugs into passing schools!

Normally the spotties are only hitting small slugs and drifted pillies although the last two trips, I decided to try trawling my 7cm bibbed rapala with two 75cm+doggies one trip and a 1.2 meter longtail the last trip which shows, keep your options open. It's always suprising where, when and how you can pull a couple of fish in. A backbone series outfit I recently bought came with one of those silver sticker lables which turn different colours at different angles. I cut a thin strip off and attached it to the back half of one of my mackmauler slugs. It was out catching all the others until with one cast I sadly saw it fly off into the wind . Once again, silly idea but it seemed to work. Just as my wife believes in calling the fish to the boat with a "here fishy fishy"

in the bay the only trolled lure i got mackerel on was a manns 10+ grey ghost-looks like a hardyhead.
i never have used the spoons, webby does that thing maybe he will post something for you. spoons are mostly over looked because of their simplicity.
off caloundra i've got them on uzi's and blue pillie lures.
in the bay the most productive method is to use 4kg/6kg spin gear and a 40gram crome slug, either casting to feeding schools or jigging the beacons near the top of the tide.

Ive fished with "line" commercially for spotties and paravanes and spoons are the go for catching large quantatees of spotties, many times weve caught 800kg in a day, but for recreational fishing much of the excitment is in the fighting and speedy runs of the fish. Light gear and slugs makes more sense to me, i works great and is more fun, why would ya bother with heavier set ups when your only allowed 5 each?

OH the cry of "Here fishy fishy fishy" I think we have all tried that one sometime.

I know I have especially chasing schools that just hang out of casting range [smiley=wut.gif]

Do you guys troll a mixture ?? Off Sydney rocks I usually troll a CD14 in close to the prop wash then a mixture of xmas trees or uzis on the outside lines & a white feather down the middle. Works ok on smaller stuff I chase - like salmon, tailor or bonito.
