    Norman Creek - advice please

We have a friend who recently bought a house backing onto the entrance to Norman creek..... and they have a little jetty (yay for me).

Any advice on... what lives there, what bait works, high/low tide which works better there..... worth throwing a crab pot in?

I've got a feeling you might get few noahs around that area. Try rigging up some poddy mullet or even 1 of the catfish under a float one night and see how it goes.

    arrrgghh.....

I just found out that the "things" hiding i nthe shed are not crab pots but are in fact operahouse redclaw pots.

    *grumble*

I have been informed that they will not do .....and here I was really looking forward to throwing some pots in at Norman Creek

Is norman creek at norman park on the brissie river? Don't know the area so assuming. If it is, that would be great living in that area and having your own jetty. I would get a pontoon and have the boat on the water ready to go. Sounds great.

Basic colapsable crab pots are about 8 - 10 dollars at most of the marts so worth picking up a couple and giving it a go. Read the regs and put your name etc on the pot. Try anything eddible as bait. There are preferred baits, but if you have easy access then doesn't hurt to try anything. Left over chop bones, leftover fish frames, anything really as long as it is not off. Would be interested to hear how different baits go.

If you get any muddies, which sounds like a definate possibility in a side creek, I found that they were better to be boiled for 15 - 20 minutes. Most say less but I find them too soft and no texture if only just cooked enough. Best way is to put them in the freezer for an our before cooking so they go to sleep. Also add rock salt to the water.

Yes probably a lpt of vermin such as cat fish, sharks etc, but you never know. Doesn't hurt to try. Just don't get spiked.

I would not go overboard in getting fish encyclopedias etc. Reading fishing magazines such as Bush and Beach and Queensland Fishing Monthly, you soon get an idea for the common species. There is a basic pocked sized guide available at most tackle shops that have most of the commin species. Cross check that against the regs and pencel in the sizes. The only other thing you need to do in know the no take species. But almost all of these are in northern waters so you should be pretty right.

Also, if you have no luck off the jetty, don't give up on it straight away. Often it is very dependant on the time of day (or night) and also the bait. The right bait for the right fish for the right time of year can be the difference between catching nothing or a bag full. If in doubt, just think fresh. If you wouldn't eat it, what makes you think a fish would.

i have done alot of fishing all over the brisbane river and i have one word for you- CATFISH! i have caught more catfish than anyone i know and although some have been massive they r still catties, after that comes sharks and eels followed by an occasional bream, when fishin a bit away from the mouth that is, such as Norman Creek. However i would be more than happy to join you for a fish because the truth is u never know what u can pull out of the brissie river and yes u can get muddies around there [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
