help in identifying fish

we think it was some kind of nannygai definately not a large mouth. it was orange in colour, with a dark orange broad line running from eye to top of head the rest of the body was blotchy orange. they were 30-35 cm so none were kept sorry no piccs

sorry mick neither of them, i wish i had i picc were pretty sure it's a nannygai but not a large mouth just not 100% & as for the size limit for nannygai i think is 40cm is this right?

I would say it was a type of anthias fish which are often found in reefy grounds like fusiliers. They are a popular aquarium fish and can grow that big

Juvenile large mouth nannys have a stripe as you described on their head. Used to get heaps of them at the leads at Weipa.

THANKS MUGIL & DOVOCEAN i'm just not sure it was a large mouth because i have a pic in a mag here of one & the mouth was no where near as big in proportion, i'm guessing it was a small mouth nannygai

Some pics of various growth stages of the largemouth nanny
(lujanus malabaricus) including the young ones.
One for example is posted hereabouts. They lose the black spot on their tail before they lose the stripe on their head.
Does that look like the critters you mention?

it was more like this one. the band through the eye didn's appear until out of the water for a 30sec or so.
