Wahoo and Spaniards

Hi everyone,

I was just wandering if anyone can tell me if Wahoo and Spaniards are primarily caught early in the morning or if they can be caught throughout the whole day? Also when trolling livies what speed should you troll at and what distance should they be from the boat?

Any help would be great..

Yes, I`ve caught most of my bigger spanish between dawn and about 9 am. I have heard of a lot being caught at dusk too, but I`m always home well before then.
I`d keep livies back a minimum of 50 mts and troll as slow as you can. Sorry , I don`t know anything about wahoo.

Agree about the spaniards, sometimes they are even a before sunrise proposition and they do bite well at dusk, but wahoo seem to have a much more extended bite period (we have had good sessions in the middle of the day), again the closer to dawn and dusk the better we have done. Cheers

Been lead to beleive that you should get an early start to catch you mac, But I caught a few on the week end at 10-11 am on Saturday.

That my thoughts, Best you get some info from someone who knows a lil more than I.

been trying to get some wahoo at 9 mile but can't get past the tuna out there - any ideas on this dilema?

Hordes of stinkin tuna out at 9mile most of the time. But patience is a virtue, you'll eventually get one.

Use one of the tuna (preferably a smaller one) for bait.
Macks and hoo love them.

It would be a massive Wahoo or mack who ate the tuna that are out there at the moment. they have been big buggers up around the 6-8 kg mark. But if i catch a small one i will definately use him as suggested.

People have said that they having been pulling the wahoo off the nine and i was just wandering how they got past the stinking tuna (even the Yellowfin).

PS. I was trolling skirts and Hardbodies and tuna everywhere. Lures were trolled for approx. only 20 seconds at times before more tuna.

Just to clarify a little…. I understand a 6 – 8 kg tuna is a fairly hefty bait.
But if you can get hold of one 4kg or less (and have a 15kg or heavier outfit to tow it with) Rig it with a stinger hook on wire hooked near the tail as well as a towing hook or bridle at the head end. Troll it slow (2 knots or so)
Preferably one about 2 – 3kg. Sometimes if you hang a small Christmas tree lure or saltwater fly out the back the smaller mack tuna, stripies or frigates will nab it.
Even a smallish wahoo or mackerel (10kg) will have a crack at a whole tuna. They try to bite the tail off first which is where the stinger does the job.
And as far as big macks and wahoo, live tuna is possibly the best way to go.
Give it a try. I’d be surprised if it lasts long.

here's my 2 cents worth.
Step 1. get some Hex Heads colour 10 black,purple+gold ( my personal favorite)
Step 2. Leave the hard bodies in the boat.
Step 3. troll the hex heads fast!!! 15 knots

I have had tuna take hex heads but only occasionally at that speed . The other day at hutchies i was trolling through tuna boils ,no tuna caught but a double hook up on wahoo.It seems to work for me
