Excellent snapper bait!
i'm with boxhead - use mullet. Better bait - tough as guts will last a tide change with 2 hooks in it without dieing & every marine predator has it on its hit list.
Still the same problem with Mullet. Be damn sure you aren't using an undersized sea mullet (legal size in QLD of 30cm - last time I checked...).

How do you identify sea mullet!!!! ???
I rang fisheries with that questions and got passed around from officer to officer, no one could tell me!
The last bloke I spoke to got stroppy with me and said "well its any mullet that swims in the sea then"
LOL, Regards, Tony
I always thought that sea mullet was the diamond scale variety that the barra won't touch. the ones with a whitish mesh pattern all over them and a visible white lip.
Any fishing is good fishing (should probably say Any fishing is...probably going to be illegal soon)
While discussing mullet are they any good bait for mackeral? Ive got a bunch of livies from the local creek and i'm going to use them when i go out tomorrow.
How do i catch live mullet ? Catching whiting is like stealing candy from a baby when using a drag net and they are mighty fine bait for flathead Herring suck because they die to fast and biddies are little spiny shits, i hate sticking my hand into a bucket of biddies lol
mullet are easy to catch with a cast net. they tend to hang round muddier banks and mangroves etc. easiest time to catch them is at low tide.
Offf topic: I was told (and tested) that the best way to keep herring alive is to rinse your bucket/bin 4 or 5 times to help get rid of the scales and then drop a couple handfulls of ice in with them. Apart from choking on the scales, they also release a toxin (when freaked???) into the water. The ice helps to slow thier life cycle down and therefore less toxin into the water (hope that made cense). This seems to work but have only tested it twice on short trips.Originally Posted by mjc85

Bah it isnt off topic when i started the thread, but my experiences with herring have only been bad, i even have built a live bait tank and the stupid things still die, maybe the suckers are "choking on their scales"
