yeah i`ve had a bad experience at the bohle to bad_buddy. 2 friends and i went out Xmass eve at about 8 hoping to catch a feed for the next day on a wreck just near maggie. it was big tides at the time and we figured we`d still be able to get in along as we heading back 3 hours or so before low. anyway to cut the story short, we spent the first 5 hours of xmass stuck on the bar out the front waiting forthe tide to come in. not a good start to the day. hence me asking the question
Ok guys and girls. i`m just wondering if anyone has used any of the boat ramps north of townsville lately?
i use the bohle lots butthe mouth of the river is crap so i`m wondering about launching at Saunders beach, Bluewater or even Balgal? any help/info would be great.

Yeah I be interested to know aswell. I remember one fateful day TimNQ and I went for spin in the Bohle one day only for it to be low tide at sunset. Low tide and that crappy location for the ramp is not a good combination as you might have guessed. The result...a busted prop and 700 dollars down the drain.

I lived in Townsville for 8 years and have been away for 3. Last year I Lauched from Saunders Creek but the creek mouth is virtually closed up - make sure you launch at half making tide or better. It makes for a long wait if the weather blows up.

As for the Bohle, avoid the ramp like the plague if under about 1.2m, or better still 1.5 (unless you enjoy being knee deep in mud retrieving your boat)
under 1m the creek access to the river is too shallow for all but a canoe. access out the front through the river mouth is best about 1.2 +. Have also heard of lots of probs with car & trailer damage during dark hours. never had any myself, but I don't leave my car there of a night.
Failing all that, it's still a pretty good access point for small boats out into the bay to the western side of maggy, offering a reasonable run home if/when the s/easters blow in the arvo.
From what I've seen, most creek mouths leading into cleveland or halifax bay are much the same, i.e. you need 1.2 to 1.5m minimum for access & it helps to know the channels
Nathan, have you been out to that wreck lately? It may be a good target for fingermark at the moment.
Balgal is about the same as the Bhole - half tide up if you want to be sure. Too many failed wet seasons mean that these creeks are all pretty shallow at the mouth.
na leo haven`t been out there for a couple of weeks now. last time i was out there it was just nannigi hey. got a prac tonight till nine but i might have a go after that. Live squid the go for fingermark?
You need 1.5m for the mouth of Rollingstone Creek. The way out is new following recent rains and follows the southern shoreline almost around to the stinger net. A couple of dangerous snags near the middle of this narrow channel so don't speed and don't do it at night unless you have had a good look around in daylight. This channel will close soon once the SEers have pushed the sand back in.
What heading do we go on from the mouth of Rollingstone Ck to that spot of yours Whiteman?

South of townsville the same. If we don't get rain soon (more like yesterday) we will all be fishing for 20 minutes either side of spring high tides before retreating to the safety of the car. I have never seen so much sand. Its only going to get worse....

Quite a few good fingermark spots on Pauma Shoals too.
The other option you could investigate would be to fish out of a hovercraft!
