Anyone got tips on hooking into a few trevally, im in Townsville at moment and when walking over rocks on monday i spotted a nice size gt in the shallows. I had 3kg spin gear in hand (totally undersized for the fish i spotted) but nonetheless i couldnt interest him into any offerings i had. I dont have my boat up here and restricted to land based action (or lack of..). The water was crystal clear and ranged from about 1m to 5m depth (which was my casting range anyway). Wasnt going swimming caus i also spotted a 2m whaler.
Any tips appreciated.

they like poppers, anything that floats and makes plenty of splash gets eaten fast in the shallows ive found, low tides been best for me, dunno about tville but.

I agree with your popper theory. I was throwing a popper about 10cm red head/white body and a few slugs. Maybe some patience and a faster spin reel would go a long way up here! Unfortunatly i was limited in what i could bring, so mainly got estuary gear.

Mick, most of the trevs ive caught on poppers have been a slow retrieve, for the pencil shape poppers you might need to crank them but the cup face once just flick the rod, when there is a few around you could catch them on anything, it wont help you when you get a 10kg one on a bream rod though lol, memorable none the less. keep us posted.
The ones ive caught were caught on those crabs that r under the rocks on points at beaches and they are brown or my dad uses some kind of fish flesh.You can have a look at one in saltwater photos then go to "My trevally".

G.ts get hyped up by baitfish activity, they like to herd up baitfish and usually feed in groups. If theres a single fish milling around in crystal clear water on a calm day you've got a pretty low chance of hooking it.
Thanks guys, prob going for a looksea on Mon or Tues, because of the location wont be using any bait or livies, bout 1hr walk over a rocky cliff! Also Maria i doubt this area has seen many fishermen, particularly landbased, only accessible by boat or tough walking and if youve got a boat y wouldnt you be on any number of awesome reefs closer to Townsville??
