Kleiny, mono about 150lb by 5m, 3/1 rule min if your putting the gear to the test.

I would use about 70-80lb mono leader eg. penn10x you will loose some fish but you'll get more bites than if you use 150lb .

I have always used an improved albright knot for joining braid to mono leaders and found it works pretty well.

I also put a touch of superglue on the knot aswell to help it not slip.

I'd use 80lb as well and use the Albright knot, wrapping the braided line around the monofil loop. It worked very well for me in the past (not using super glue).

    Cheers,

super glue is handy to hold the tags down if you have a long leader realing the knot through to the spool or if you ever want to cast, i agree Albright the best.

    Geez !

I don't know about you pretty boys...

What ever happen to the 100lb handline with a stonker of a sinker on the end and a hook tied somewhere a little up from that? [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

And, finishing the day with cuts on every finger, aching arms, burns from line shredding up your hands and tub full of red and orange fish? 8)

    Ohhhh, gone are the days..................

Its all about super sonic, high definition, multi strand, fusion fed, double strenth, extra power, super light weight, heavy durability, invisable, power strength line or braid...... ???

    PS whats a swivel?

    Geez Mick
You sound like the father-in-law! He loves the handline, that was till i took him fishing in 100+ meters after i had 5 fish on board and he still hadn't felt the bottom let alone a fish he started looking longingly at the CARBON FIBRED OVERHEAD ROD with the HIGH SPEED OVERHEAD REEL and the VERY FINE,LOW STRECH,50 POUND BRAID. After i had both his and my share of pearlies on board the sulking started, So when we went off to find some snapper on the reef with the VERY EXPENSIVE,WASTE OF MONEY COLOUR SOUNDER using the WASTE SPACE PLOTTER,LAND MARKS ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME i lent him the above rod !

Well the hand line has never come again and every time i phone him looking for a deckie the first question he asks is GOT A ROD FOR ME.

    How times change!

Well said F_T. I've moved into an area of NQ which is full of old style fishos who are happy to sit out all night in their tinnies using handlines and the like. Fishing technology is moving at a similar speed to general IT and I'm taking advantage of this and my catch rates are double anyone elses and I don't get out for much time with 2 young kids.

For the record, 60-80lb Jinkai leader with the latest albright version. Don't worry about super glue as I want to keep this the weakest link in the chain as there are times when you need to let things break (snags or freight trains).

    Kleiny
The albright or a double uni.
I always do a double in the braid (bimini) before tying the mono on.
Most knots will work in braid, just double the amount of twists. I use the uni for most things. If tying swivels etc straight to braid, the palomar is also quite good.
On the reef for trout, reds etc, I use 60 or 80 lb leader for abrasion around the reef.

Ian, good stuff mate, I was laughing pretty hard!

Only joking on the primative fishing however I do have a high regard for all my handlines. Sometimes have to tap into both worlds of technology and raw, brut strength.
I can't realy talk, my last deep sea fishing was done with 110lb handline on a winch. I know, not much of sporting chance hey? I pulled up a 30kg plus gold spot cod with one hand..., and I didn't even put my beer down..., oh, occaionaly I'd stop winding to take a swig. 8)
