    Hi Brad,

I'm no expert on Hervey livies, but you'll find herring around the Kingfisher Bay jetty (i assume the same around Urangan Pier?), hardy heads around the western beaches of Fraser, and I've also found slimies at Arch Cliff reef and also around the Wathumba One Mile, but these last two have been very hit and miss.

If you manage to find a reliable supply of slimies up there I'd love to hear about it.

    Regards,
    Dave.

    Re: HERVEY BAY

    THANKS DAVID-P

WHATS D TECHNIQUE FOR CATCHIN THESE.
DO THEY TAKE BAITS, JIGS, ??
I HAVE ONLY REALLY HIT THE ARTIFICIAL REEFS OFF BIG WOODY ISLAND, DUE TO AN UN-RELIABLE OLD BLUE-BAND MOTOR , NOT A WHOLE LOT OF SUCCESS, GOT A COUPLE OF JUST LEGAL PARROT, AND SAME FOR THE SNAPPER, COUPLE OF DELICIOUS COD ALSO, BUT A LOT OF BAIT WAS USED GETTING THESE FISH.
SQUID, FRESH PRAWNS, QUALITY BAIT BUT NOT LIVE BAIT.
A FEW BLOKES RECON THAT THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE SUCCESS AT THE ARTIE'S IS TO USE LIVE BAITS, SO ALL I NEED NOW IS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CATCH EM AND WHERE TO CATCH EM ???

    Hi Brad,

Get the slimies with bait jigs, can also get the herring this way too, but quicker to chuck a cast net over them. So far as the hardy heads go, I use a bait net and wade out with a mate.

I agree with Kleiny on the better locations too. Rooneys is one of my favourites. Check out this website for more info and some GPS marks http://www.fishntales.com

What's your new rig going to be? Whatever it is make sure you have plenty of fuel as it's a long run to Roonies from Urangan, and should it get rough you'll need extra fuel.

    Good luck

    Dave.

Hi Dave, like your boat. Can you give us a few stats?

Talking about fuel, I would like to try up around Rooneys and was wondering how much fuel to take. My boat is a Haines Hunter Breeze 510 with a Johnson 90hp 4 stroke and 120 under floor fuel tank and an extra 23ltr portable tank. By the chart, it appears to be about 40nm each way so with a fuel usage of 1.1nm/ltr I would need a minimum of 75-80ltrs plus whatever used at Rooneys. So 143ltrs appears to be ok with adequate in reserve for bad weather. Can I have your thoughts on this please? What fuel do you use on a trip?

    Would appreciate your input, thanks.

    Hi Morlers,

Thanks for the compliment on the boat. I've only had it about 6 months and love it!

Your logic looks sound in working out how much fuel you'll need. The key is to know from experience how much fuel your boat actually uses. From memory it is 50km from Urangan to Wathumba and another 20 odd km from there to Rooneys.

I live in Brisbane, so whenever I head to Rooneys it is usually an extended trip of anywhere between 3 and 7 days. So don't normally plan as closely for the fuel as you are. I just take as much as I can fit on board and make sure I've got enough to get home at the end of the trip. For a week I fit 300 litres under the deck and take another 240 in drums.

We base ourselves at Wathumba Creek and do daily runs with some overnighters around Rooneys. Sometimes I bring fuel home and other trips I wish I had more. We invariably get a day or two of bad weather and end up having a "lay day" (AKA p*ss up ) in the creek. The more lay days, the more fuel I take home, and vice versa. There is a lot of water to explore up there so take what you can reasonably fit on board, and if it does get rough your fuel consumption can double! I usually budget on 1 litre of fuel per km, just to be safe, but then I'm running a 200 4 stroke on a 6.6m hull.

I'd be interested in hearing how you get on if you get up to Rooneys.

    Good luck,
    Dave.

    G'day Kleiny,

Unfortunately no. I haven't been up that way since Easter. I'm hoping to get back for a few days around the 23/6, and then again from the 2/6 to the 6/6. I really like the full moon and new moon tides around Rooneys at this time of the year.

Hope you get a few on Sunday.

    Dave.
