Ciguatera.. It builds up in the food chain.Starts with small fish feeding on dinoflagulates #(spelling). Larger fish eat the small fish and build it up in thier system, then larger fish eat those, and so on. Some of the more predatory fish such as spanish, wahoo, coral trout etc can build it up enough to make them dangerous to eat.
Personally I wouldn't eat a trout over 9-10kg or a spanish over 10kg. The symptoms can be horrendous, and can also re-occur when you eat small amounts, once you have it built up in your system. One of the worst culprits seems to be Barracuda, has been a few poisonings around here from these.

    Generally not nice

Kleiny the eastern end of the reef is called the fish tails because of its shape.

Sorry to get off the initial topic but just had to mention that if you have never had Ciguatera poisoning be very grateful. I have had it and I really thought I was going to kaak it. Had pins and needles, fever, crapped blood and that was the good bit. Doc said that this stays in your system indefinitely and it is an accumulation of either mercury or iodine(can't remember which one)
Basically each time you get it from then on it gets worse, if that is possible. Trust me it sucks big time. A Seafood shop in Townsville selling "mixed reef fish fillet" was responsible.
Yeah mixed with chinaman fish, barracuda etc.
I eat mainly estuary fish now.

That is the problem. But you should enjoy it any way, would be the best way to do it off a mothership. Looking forward to hearing how you go.
