Have a look at this bream i caught at Stradyy last week!
Note the weird shape to its head ? Does anyone have any ideas as to what causes this to bream or seen something similar before ??? I had another bream that had a similar shape to its head but a lot less pronounced.
The bream looks worse for wear as it has been scaled! ???

...or something prob had a chomp at it, but it lived on till now.
i think i knows what it is, i used to quite commonly come across bream like this in the mary river and had my suspitions as to what it may have been.
one day fishing for cod using bream for live bait, had a big run dropped the fish pulled up the bream and under the belly just behind the head was scale less, and behind the head on top there was a big chunk missing i imagine when it heals it looks very similar to what you've got.
by the way it was still kickin put it back down and caught a 20lb cod..
anyway that's just my thoughts maybe someone else knows better.

Nemo & I have caught ones like that in the Brisbane River.... I just thought they were the "hillbilly" bream!

Am I correct in saying you scaled it because you've cleaned the fish and are going to it?
As for the malformity - it's definitely been caught in some form of gill net as a juvenile. There actually quite common - as I've caught a few and some blokes I spoke to at fisheries a while back said they come up all the time in trial catches etc.
I guess we can take heart from the fact that it either made it's way out of the net or the fisherman with the net released it successfully.

Agree have seen plenty of posts on similar fish and seem to be from being caught in a net at some stage.
i have caught a few bream like that over the years and i always thaught that it must have been attacked as a juvinile. but the net scenario would also make sence

yeh we get a lot of fish like that in and around lake illawarra to ,definalty mesh net escapees.
ive even seen a pro taking fish from his net and they pull the fish through head first and if they are under the legal limit they are released ,idd only be guessing but idd say that juvinile fish would be similar to babys and they toughen up as they get older so having your head suashed through a net may leave the deformity
