Tuna, longtail  Thunnus tonggol  IGFA re

Does any one know what the Line class and all tackle records for the Tuna, longtail Thunnus tonggol.

I would love to know what they and and I wouldn't mind knowing what the records (including line class) for Mackrel Tuna as well.

    Nick, check out ansaqld.com.au

Sportfishing (division 1) records for longtail are:
    line weight
    1 5.5
    2 8.66
    3 18.3
    4 18
    6 25.2
    8 22.2
    10 22.8
    15 25.1

All tackle record is 26 kg. There are also records for division 2 (lurecasting) and division 4 (gamefishing).

Did you get a big one? What size?

I am planning on getting 30kg longtail on 3 or 4kg with soft plastics. have been getting tuna slightly smaller including ones over those weights on the light stuff so when more of the longtail tuna tuna up in the bay I will have had some practise as I would like to smash the line class records instead of just breaking them.

What length leader is allowed when using lures for ANSA, are they the same as IGFA rules.

just found the All tackle record for longtail tuna

    35.925KG/Montague Is., NSW, Australia/Apr. 12, 1982/Tim Simpson

Don't know that I have seen one that big not on the end of my line . Biggest would be around 30kg, any bigger hasn't taken any of my soft plastics yet

Nick, double and leader length for division 1&2 is 1.5X the rod length. For game fishing, there are more specific rules and varies depending on light or heavy tackle. Same rules as IGFA anyway. Need to use pretest mono line also.

You will need to be a member of an ANSA club to be eligible to claim ANSA records. IGFA records also, but not sure how that relates to ANSA records.

Quite a detailed process claiming a record. I am just going through the process now.

By the way, this is a 19.8 kg longtail (taken on 6 kg mono). Will be a very good effory to get one over 20 kg on 3 or 4 kg line, but you might be lucky and hook one which doesn't go so hard!

Any Mack Tuna over 9.? kgs would also be an ANSA record in any line class. They are out there!

If you're hunting solid Longtails in good numbers Laguna Bay at Noosa can turn it on. I've got a mate who's a pro down there, and used to go along with him while he trawled for prawns about 500m off the bar. Around March to May from memory. Anyway, the Longtails would follow the boat around all day, feeding on trash fish, and you could handfeed them at the side of the boat. To hook one all you had to do was put a trash fish on your hook and slap it on the water. Awesome site to see about five big Longtails swoop in from all directions and one would pick up the bait and go screaming off. All quality fish too - the smallest we got was about 11kg, and the biggest close to 30!

So if you hear of the pros getting prawns in Laguna Bay and there's tuna about, could do worse than to follow them around for a bit.

    cheers,

    steve.

I have caught a few Mack Tuna around the 12kg mark now 8), so maybe the next one I or anyone on AUsfish gets should keep it

In regards to LT's over 20kg I just chase them with the boat as the Motor never gets tuned off (4 stroke) I have cught them with only 80m of line on a little BC reel and 3 peice graphite travel rod. There are some huge LT's around somtimes it is just the sharks tend to prevent me getting 30kg+ fish when using the light weight lines.

Anyone got any tips on keeping the sharks away
