MMMMMM, DONT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS !
HOPE TO GET A FIRST HAND VIEW OF IT ON SUNDAY
GOT THE NEW TOY AND STILL NO TIME TO PLAY, ITS TO BIG TO GO THROUGH THE GARAGE DOOR. SO IM PUTTING UP A 4M HIGH 3.6M WIDE SET OF GATES CENTER OPENING AT A FURTHER COST OF $1,200

    Brad,

I'll be heading up your way on the 2/7, so if your keen to have a serious look at Breaksea, why don't we meet up on the water and have a go together. I've been up around the top of Breaksea a couple times, but have never had another boat to cross Breaksea with. Quite frankly I'm a tad nervous on doing that one on my own!

I went through there with Time and Tide Charters from Hervey Bay a couple of times. Scary place.

Keyhole doesn't show it very good. Getting back to some of the earlier questions, to build up your experience of Breaksea Spit it is probably best to carry enough extra fuel to attempt the 13 mile crossing a few times first and always keep enough fuel up your sleeve so that if you have to come back in and it is a bit gnarly use the 13 mile instead of the 4 mile. The 13 mile doesn't really break but it can stand up a bit in those wind against tide situations. As in all bar crossings try to cross on a run-in tide. From the 13 mile north you can nearly cross anywhere on a good day with a few other gutters like the 18 mile etc. Probably good options if coming across from Bundy or whatever. The other way is to go all the way out to the beacon indicating safe water just inside where the light ship used to be and it is about 23 miles off Sandy Cape. The 13 mile is sort of the trawler crossing. With regard the 4 mile, why it used to be bad was it faced SE on the outside. The gutter would act like a big funnel facing into the swells, funneling them and making them get pretty big just outside the sand island where the gutter was at its narrowest. All of the gutters inside the 13 mile can and do break quite easily.

Went through there a couple of weeks ago with a charter operator - it was blowing 20knots and the swell was up around 3 metres + and there were a few scary moments. Came back in several days later and it was a diferrent kettle of fish. Not sure I would like to do it on my own.
BYW I believe the light ship area is all green zone now so no more chasing dolphin fish up there.

    G'day Smithy,

Any chance you could give a mark as a guide for the 13 mile crossing? I'll be up that way around the end of this month, and IF the weather is GREAT, I'd like to have a look at Breaksea. Fuel capacity is not problem for me and am quite prepared to return via the top end of Breaksea if necessary.

I scare pretty easy, so if it looks at all dodgy, I'll give it a miss and play around the inside of the bay as usual....

    Regards,
    Dave.

Re: THAT BAR @ THE NORTHERN END OF FRASER ISLAND

we cross this bar regularly and it is like any other crossing pick your weather to cross or you will be in the sh-t. the best option on the four mile is to be up there at around seven oclock in the morning and follow one of the charter or pro boats over if you feel uncomfortable. If you do get some marks to cross this david.p make sure you have a good look yourself before you attempt to cross as the sand moves a lot up there. if you do cross by yourself be warned the four mile had a massive dogleg to the right the last time we crossed. if you do cross you wiil not be dissapointed the fishing is top notch take a heavy threadline with you and some poppers. Find the fusilers on the surface throw your popper at them and hang on for dear life.

    Kratzy,

Thanks for the tips. Judging by the forecast I won't be getting anywhere near it though. Tomorrows a good day, but Sunday and Monday the SE is coming up. Bugger!!!

Re: THAT BAR @ THE NORTHERN END OF FRASER ISLAND

Went through a couple of weeks ago. Fishing was crap for us. One Pearly on a jig in 110m was it. It was purely a jigging and Marlin trip - didn't want to mess up the boat!

    Here are some pics.

    Trolling, trolling, trolling........

This is right at the 0 mile crossing. Thanks Mackmauler
