Just wondering if anyone can give me some ideas for rigging up various live baits, ie where do you position the hook so that the bait stays alive?

i go through the nose if trolling
below the tail if i want it to stay high
above the tail if i want it to go deep and in the sholder if i just want ti sitting out the back![]()
Single Mustad Hoodlum, hand sharpened, for'wd of dorsal if drifting, aft of dorsal if anchored. Cheers, good luck.![]()
the rig
this is the night time wire version (shown cause it scans ok) used for more toothy critters (tailor), trace is 7strand nylon coated. Note the glow bead between the hooks - gets charged up in torch light for a while before launching. The rig can be used on strips then immediately on a small live tailor without changing rigs & risking the tailor dieing.
Top hook is snooded on using a tight nylon snell & is therefore adjustable (with force) - the bead attracts attention & protects the knot on the bottom hook.
Jew, cobia & flathead tend to be caught on the hook closest to the head of the baitfish - the more nasty critters near the middle & tail
closest hook to the rod tip, in the nose from underneath, slow trolling or drifting with a sinker bouncing a herring or mullet
* hooks & baitfish are not to scale
closest hook to rod tip in the tail & underneath
allows (makes) the baitfish swim away from rod tip. Underneath for if using a sinker or using a baitfish that hangs on the surface & the conditions are calm ie mullet
hook closest to the tip near the rear well clear of tail & on top
the surf set up - makes the livie swim out - the line tends to ride up in the surf & with a 13ft rod ....
also use it in the boat to make a livie swim away
livie under a float or balloon - the float or balloon takes the baitfish away from the boat , hook positioning like this they tend not to fight the float & last longer
all images use stunt fish - no baitfish were harmed in this demonstration.
most important is to only "pin" the livie - a tag of skin - alot of guys crucify their livies by using huge thick hook & shoving it deep into the fish
best o' luck
hope this helps
Those are the best entertainment value pickies for the dayon ya Chris.
some pretty cool pickies and rigging techniques on Heath's site as well

ps Heath's is a cool site & he's a gun fisho, the site has heaps of good info - personally I don't like keeper hooks, i'd prefer to copper wire the nose than put a small hook that couldn't totally penetrate a big fish in a critical position.
As I said, my personal preference - Heath certainly has caught heaps of big fish.
Only a quarter of a bottle mate ??
Good work with the pics - I certainly learned a few things.
Cheers

Apparently that form of accupunture does wonders for tailor that have bad backs Chris![]()
