Hey everyone,
Going to Fraser in sept and my brothers looking at getting a good surf combo. Wants a spinning reel but other than that not many restrictions. Anyway just wondering what sort of thing he should be looking at with a budget of about $300. Any advice on whats worked for you and how much he should spend on reel/rod would help heaps!

FIncho... Not sure maybe get a Penn 7500 SS.. not sure how much but i would guess around the $200 mark and then get a decent rod for 100-150. Thats my opinion but i aint sure.

reels, your choice.... would suggest an alvey but it seems like you prefer the egg beaters.
rods. try a MSS ( mag surf standard ) approx,13'6" composite. beatifull tailor rod that will hurl a 10 ball for miles will cost you about $200-$220 bucks.
Yeah hah dont worry fincho knows alveys would b the best option, jsut his bro has enver used one and only has experience with an eggy. cheers,

Go for the MagSurf/Alvey650A5 combo. It will literally last you a lifetime and will pull almost everything that swims at the beach (within reason). Mine would be coming up to 18 yrs old and is still my main fish catcher.

The reason I ask is an Alvey is better suited to the task & it will save him the money that he can put toward buying a decent surf rod.

The thing is and im not entirly sure if this is true but i have been lead to believe that spinning reels have a faster retrieve than alveys. As we generally use chrome slugs off the beach (i use bait too but dad and brother prefer slugs) and my brother prefers lure fishinig to bait fishing and past experience has shown me that you want your chrome slug moving as quickly as possible he thaught that a spinning reel might be the way to go for the fishing he wants to do.

a spinning reel may then suit you better if using slugs.
Alvey now have a high ( higher then normal ) speed retrive model, not sure if it would still be suited to spinning though.

but i use a TSS4 for the job loaded with 18lb line.
The 18lb really lets you launch into a cast.
I have a specific rod for it too that I won in a comp.
An alvey will cast a raider further though. The small spools on the spinners kill the casts once the lip becomes exposed. I wish shimano would taper spools to make these high speed work horses more efficient casting reels.
The TSS4 drags I think are sealed & have survived so far, but they don't get dunked or laid down on the sand where the "ground wind" can blow fine sand into them.
Believe it or not Camp Mart can be the cheapest place to buy a TSS4.

I also use a TSS4 matched to a FSU4120G and 7kg Fireline. This is a relatively cheap, tough and powerful surf spinning outfit that can also double up for bait fishing. All up you should be around the $300 mark if you shop around.

Alvey have a highspeed reel with a 2:1 ratio ,it recovers about a metre of line per handle turn. If you really crank it, the line will burn your finger.... Plenty fast enough for most beach work. Stainless steel gears , drop it in the drink ,get sand in it... no problem,, try doing that to your spin reel.
The only downside is its a bit heavier the your standard Alvey.
Load it up with 40 lb line and whack it on a boat rod and its a good offshore outfit. A very versetile reel

thanks heaps for the feedback the high speed alvey looks like it may be the way to go and previously i didnt even know they were made. My brother having very little experience may still choose to go with a spinning reel but will show him this post to try and convince him!
