well had my maiden voyage into morten bay, yet again i was confronted with a typically crap boat ramp, whats with brisbane ramps , they are the worst in australia, very hard when you are by yourself, anyway i launched at wellington point around 6ish in a polycraft so you may or may not have seen me.
well i went through the channel and turned rite and fished that reef bank, i drifted over the 5 m line all moring, now i have no idea if this area is called wello so if someone can clear that up for me that would be great.
anyway caught my first pinkie on a plastic , great feeling although it was only 32cm, also caught undersize moses perch , grinners and found a massive school of pike that well caught have caught hundreds.
so it was a good start although no keepers. so guys was i in the rite spot. ps i saw a turtle and for a melbourne boy thats a big thing wildife up here is awsome.
Good for you flynny 8),
what sort of plastic and jig head did you get him on?? And what sort of gear (sp setup)?? Am extremely keen to have a crack at em. Ended up catching bream in the seaway this weekend, but keen to have a crack at wello squire next week.
Cheers Fritzy
PS. reckon there would be any problem taking the 4.35 tinny out there??
PPS. Huybers beacon is on the left of the leads - according to the picture in the most recent beacon to beacon. Must admit though mate - haven't fished the area yet.
Cheers Fritzy
so wello is to the left, in my map book. there is reefs both side, to the left you have king island and that beacon, i saw boats there, however i saw boats to the rite aswell so i fished the rite, now i have no idea which one is best.
ok i was using berkelys 3inch and i caught the pinkie on a 3inch grub eco gear plastic it was new at the shop it has little fins on the side that move along with the tail.
anyway i`ll have a look more closely at my set up, as i just through a combo together.
Flynny15 i guess you are use to sandy boat ramps down south but when you are around rocky reef area's you just have to take a mate with you to hold the boat.
Wello ramp has gravel both sides but only when the tide is low.
Once you go through the leads you are close to the Wello drop off and this area extends both North and South (Huybers beacon to Ormiston point)parallel to the coast although there is a shallow bay heading south up towards Ormiston point.
For best results fish light line and use light jigheads 1/8th up to 1/4oz if the conditions are choppy and the current is fast flowing.
Green plastics from 3 to 4" work well for me but you just have to try a few different colours to see what they prefer on the day.
6lb green or smoke fireline with an 8 or 10 lb flurocarbon leader.....you can go heavier at night time.
Keep away from the shallows during the day when the water is clear....(if theres some chop on the water and its stiirred up they feel at home)....5 to 6 metres is where they hang out until dusk then they move into the shallows during the night.
Keep trying the plastics mate because you will be rewarded soon.
Cheers Brent
cheers mate that was really informative, yeah the water was so clear i could see the bottom in a bout 4 m. now here is my question when i was drifting the tide was on the way out, so i was drifting away from the land, do u cast to where you are drifting to , or do you cast the plastic where you drifted from??????
also about the boat ramps, my problems is that there is no platforms next to them or jetties, see in mlebounre they are all praticualy platformed and the ones that arent will be soon.
yes its just annoying cause i kinda like my prop, so i dont want to break it, plus when u are by yourself its bloody hard. i saw a guy on sat push of then tried to start his boat and well what happened was he went under the jetty into the rock wall. with a pull start engine i dont like pushing of first just in case that happens to me.
Giday Aquarius,
Found some cheap berkley powerbaits today - bought a couple of pacs of 4" powerbaits. Wondering what sort of hooks these are best matched with. Have always used squidie hooks for flathead in the past - but i suspect that even small squire would probably straighten these hooks. Are the nitro jig heads the way to go??
Cheers Fritzy
Fritzy match those plastics up with 1/8th nitro 2/0 heavy wire hooks........Wello is best fished with very light jigheads mainly because of the depth and the rough structure.......I even use the 2 gram squidgy finesse 2/o hooks to get the plastic drifting down slowly.... looks more natural to a fish.
Try not to let the jighead sit on the bottom structure for too long.......Wello is a great place to lose your jigheads!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome aquarius,
thanks for those tips. PS. you recon i need the heavy gauge nitro hooks - bait shop i was in only had the light ones. Will have to find a new bait store...
Cheers Fritzy
