When fishing for whiting during the day especialy if they are very scarce or finiky, i will hold my rod and work the bait through areas of the drain.
I also hold the rod when prospecting gutters for fish as it easy to pull the landy upto a drain, jump out, grab a rod and have a few flicks in to areas of it to see whats holding in it then ill fish it later with the holders.
Drew, threw this question in at the end of that massive thread that came from your rundown on Rainbow, but seeing as Fritzy has touched on it here, could I also ask you to give a bit of a rundown on where different species tend to lurk within gutters/holes? Bream, whiting and tailor are what I had in mind.
Seamus,
I started fishing the surf in mid 1960's with a couple of surf fishing champions of the tweed club and i watched the places they fished and learnt a lot just by the types of formation of the gutters, time of tide, depth of water, wind, cloud cover, time of day. and a combination of those, so it is not easy to explain much to you unless you are on the beach and looking at the surf to be able to explain to you. but you can learn a lot from (becoming a better fisherman) hints & tips. I hope to meet you on the beach one day.spindles
Spindles, yeah, pretty open ended question I know, but got to give it a run. Am heading to Fraser for a week in September, so hoping to hone the skills (and blood a new combo!) Thanks for the reply, and I'll be looking out for ya.
Seamus
sorry seamus for the slow reply works been going crazy this week and it looks like im going to miss my club comp this weekend >
this is a very hard to explain topic as so many factors i think influence fish but in genral, bream seem to congregate in the dead end sections of drains and gutters. here given the right situation they can school up big time and collect the food which is washed over the sand banks around them however in these areas they a very easily spooked as well. Also the corner of the inner bank where the suck out starts is allways a good spot to snare a pilot bream entering the gutter.
I find small in close long drains paralle to the shore are excellent for big whiting. there must be a large inner bank which is in easy casting distance on a half full tide. the whiting will sit right along the drop off of the inner bank and in the surrounding melon holes.
For tailor there are two formations i look for a) a high bank in between two gutters that i find tailor cross when traveling ( sweep through )between deep water hitting anything that moves in the area.
B) a drain/gutter that has a inner bank that is fishable on high tide and a suck out at each end. I find the tailor almost surf over the bank chassing food the exit through the deeper water.
Theses are just very genral descriptions as i would need to write an essay to include all aspects that may be relevant to the situation.
seeing a situation, a formation and the results they have produced over and over is the only real way to learn what works when.
many people have different ideas and opinions that they swear by. many beaches fish completley differently to the beach 200Km away.
all factors that need considering
let us know how you go at fraser? what was caught and where.
seamus,
if you check out the picture on beach fishing it gives you a variety of types of places you can fish for different fish. http://www.ausfish.com.au/beach.html. study this picture and next time you are catching a type of fish you will then know that type usually feeds in that aera of water.

I agree with Chris AKA GWH as this is the way i fish in the surf. You miss too many subtle bites otherwise . Its an awesome sound hearing a13 foot rod smack the beach and bolt into the water faster than a cut snake. Some big toothy critter on the other end.
