The Most Frustrating Reel
Recently bought a Shimano Corsair CS300. i bought a pretty nifty rod to go with it as well as some 15lb line. every time i cast (4 in total) the line spins around itself and tangles the guts out of the reel. had to cut the whole reel of line off twice!
why does this happen? line too heavy?
any knobs i can turn on it while i cast to ensure it wont stupidly tangle?

rhinoauk
pratice pratice and more pratice
try it in the back yard with a small sinker on the end
I find a smaller casting action at the start till you get the hang of it worked for me.
and use your thumb to control the speed of the line (make sure you stop the line at the same time your sinker hits the water.)
I've only just started using a similar reel and it just takes pratice.
good luck

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
What you are experiencing is called 'over run'. In other words, the reel is spinning faster than the line moving through the air, and if you don't stop the reel when the line hits the water it will keep spinning and makes things even worse. There should be an adjuster that you can tighten slightly to slow down the spin of the reel. Also keep your thumb close and ready to stop it as soon as your line hits the water. You have a damn good reel, it just requires practice and patience. As caloundra said, small casts to start with. Watch the way the reel performs, cast gently until you get the hang of it, but always be ready with that thumb to stop it.

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
yeh there is a knob on the side for adjusting the spin of the cast sumthingaruther. so i tighten iit or loosen it? tighten i guess. so as it hits the water put my thumb on it and gently let it sink to the bottom.
if i put 20kg line on suppose, will the overrun get worse?
thanks 4 the help

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
Rhinoauk, I hope the Ausfish goon squad don't come after me, but I'm going to refer you to another site where I found a good article about this a while ago.
Author is Colin Buckley on the Fishnet site. Look in the library section and search using baitcaster as your keyword. Article 'How to use a Baitcaster/overhead reel ' dated 10/12/02 runs you through it. Am now going into hiding. 8)

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
Good explainations guys. I was always told to set the speed that the reel spins at every time I fished a different senario ie changing sinker weight,Lure size and distance. You should with every setup hold the rod in the air and let your combination of tackle free fall to the ground,if you thinK it falls way to quick tighten it or vice verus. After time you will know the speed the reel should spin at.I hope this will help, sure helped me. Good luck Mate

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
If useing mono,20kg is way to heavy for this reel,20kg braid is probably way to heavy also,I personaly would opt for 20 pound max and run a 40 pound leader if you need the abrasion resistance.

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
15 or 20 lb is way to heavy, try 8 lb and like the boys said practice practice practice. Cast drag is critical till you get used to throwing one of these, the other is being able to thumb the line whilst you are casting. By thumb the line you need to watch what you are throwing and as the bait/lure slows down you need to slow the spool down wheather it be by the cast control or your thumb.
Don't give up, sight fishing is the way to go. I got 5 jew the biggest 12.6 kg, kept 2, down the pin 2 weeks ago by sight fishing with an abu black max 3500 with 8 lb.

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
How did you spool the reel ? If the line is on too loose it will overun no matter what you do. For small reels using monofilament line I use a bucket of warm water and drop the new line spool in there and wind it on the reel using a fair bit of tension with your fingers.

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
I have a couple corsairs. Not bad reels but not up to real tough stuff due to nylon internals. I would be staying with lighter line. They also have brake adjustors inside the reel to control overrun a bit. The manual should tell you how they work. Use that outside knob to control tension every time you change weights. And like the others say - practice. Overheads are quite simple to use if you follow the basics.

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
Just keep your thumb on the spool as you cast (as light as a feather) and you will feel the line slow as the weight passes the top of its trajectory.Takes practice, dont try to go long till you can control the spool
Good luck, doesnt take long to get the knack

Re: The Most Frustrating Reel
yeh i put the line on with a fair bit of tension. i usually put something soft like the end of a blanket in my hand and reel it on slow and tight. i can cast a mile with a normal beach rod but im struggling with this 1. hopefully thursday morning will be a change though and i can go catch meself sum sharks!
