Mate, get yourself a copy of the "Jewfish Secrets" DVD. It is an awesome DVD, and will give you all the info you need for bait, rigs, etc. The movie is all fishing out of a boat, but the techniques are pretty much the same for landbased. The spots they show on the DVD (All Sydney based - within 2 hours of you) are relatively close to shore, so if you can get to some of the places, you should be in with a shot.

Yes Yellowtail are great bait for Jewies. My best results have been when I use them live or butterflied... But make sure, no matter what bait you use, that it is FRESH!!!!

Also - Don't discount soft plastics...

try the western side of barrenjoey headland on a high tide after dark when the boat traffick stops. have tacken good jew there on a run out tide too but the vermin gets a bit thick on the run out so prefer a rising tide. won"t give exact location as is super secret but the comfy looking rock is preety crappy so look for rocks in the same area that you have to get your feet wet to get to and you will do much better. good luck on the stinkers.

That's the only way to catch em! If there's no bait in the water, you can't get em...

Good luck mate. Let us know how you go.

could anyone tell me how best to rig up a live yellowtail?

The only Jewies i've seen caught were off harrington breakwater and the bloke was rigging up with yellowtail the same way you would for flathead with live poddies.

ie, heavey sinker, meter lead, hook through the yakka's lip. and leaving them on the bottom.

or would, most of you not use any lead ??

    please explain.

    cheers

use just enough lead to keep the livey down with yakkas being the prefered bait. try around the lane cove river(norwood wharf) and blues pt.
in a boat around the spit bridge and the sow n pigs.
i fished there ten year ago.

If you don't have them live, then try butterflying them. Cut along the backbone from the tail up to just behind the head (Same way as if you were filleting), but leave it attached. Then flip it over, and do the same on the other side. Then pull the backbone out.

This will give you a fish head with 2 fillets attached that will "float around" in the current. They will also provide their own little burley slick in the water... Then put one hook through the mouth of the bait (Up through the bottom of the jaw, and out through the top of the top jaw) and another through one of the fillets.

This is a picture (A 2 minute one made in Microsoft Paint - So it's not real good) that hopefully will give you an idea of what I'm talking about...

The top hook (The one through the mouth) can be snelled onto your line.
These can be run as a "dropper" from your main line...

(As a question for everyone - Could you just run the hook loose - ie not snelled, just the line through the eyelet and left to run free? - I might start a thread on this...)
