so shoud i bring a gaff to?

i will probably just get out a bait jig and cast it into the surf and get some average sized dart to try for live bait.

Ummm if your going to b fishing off the rocks I'd probably suggest one. you were there last year so you know the rocks and its a pretty decent drop and can get pretty damn dangerous with the waves so i know i wouldnt wana be climbing down to pull up a big fish.

Take a gaff chemmy. Even in the surf. If your pulling a big fish out of the waves its best to use something to hold him. And its not the best idea to be trying to gill a fish in the dark. especially when theres a chance he's 6 foot long and has a mouth full of teeth.

If it was possible, it would also be an idea to up line weight. If the fish werent scared by wire traces then chances are you can get away with heavier line as well. Just a thought.

    hey fellas,

catch a tailor & feel the edge of its teeth, they are sort of cupped at the back & they have a sharp edge - not as pronounced as a mackerals but it gets better with size. These are teeth made for ripping; they chomp, chomp, head shake, accelerate, swallow.
When you get lucky enough check out a jews teeth - they are rounded - for grabbing, before they spit, suck back in and swallow. Big ones miss the first 2 steps.

A big tailor will slice 150lb nylon (which is probably as stiff as 50lb plasti-coated multi strand) - a 30kg jew can be landed on 50lb nylon leader. Use nylon for the jew, wire for the tailor. If you are targeting jew, have a huge run after 6 hrs & get bitten off as I did 2 weeks ago - then call it a shark or a tailor - you didn't lose ya jew.

That's why there's an aura about em - you've got to be willing to forgo the other stuff. Its like those guys that target tuskas.

    seeyainthesurf,
    chris

A 6 and a half inch alvey would be best. The 6 inch alvey have a very shallow spool. A 6 1/2 inch can hold about 900m of 20lb line and bout 500m of 55lb. Good reels for controling big fish. Slam your hand into it and that fish is either going to stop or snap.
Like chris said, if you want a jew, target them. Dont expect them to be bycatch. They're hard enough to catch on their own, let alone expecting them as bycatch.
A 6 1/2 inch alvey can be used for almost anything from bottom bouncing to jew to sharks to LBG etc etc
Good luck chemmy and jackash. The reports should be good when you finally get there.
