I was talking with the ranger on the beach last week and he mentioned there is a management plan floating around discussing all sorts of bans and closures. Items included banning motorbikes (a good thing), installing fire rings in camp sites or banning open fires altogether ala Fraser, closure of Combuyoro Pt to vehicular traffic, closing the beach area near Honeymoon Bay to beach traffic, closing Eagers creek as well as Yellowpatch campgrounds - all in all a bit scary.
I asked him where I could get further information but then he shut up.
I'm not surprised. A lot of people heading to Moreton these days, the need for better management is no-doubt needed. The word must be out on how good a place it is I love the place. I havn't been over in a few years but I'm guessing that gone are the days when you can stand on the eastern beach, look right and left as far as the eye can see, and not see a single person/car. The MI Cat hasn't helped the cause. Did I read a recent report on here about someones experience with finding a heap of buried rubbish all over the island? Its one spot I would like to see well looked after. I want to bring my kids there one day.
We are veterans of the Moreton Trip for over 10 years now... The ranger's indicated that there will be a GPS mark for every individual camp site, to allow an easy reservation system that will ensure the dunes are protected and the Island does not get over run.
This promise has never eventuated, but hopefully they start investing some coin and start monitoring the Island's capabilty in "real" (hopefully PENN terms....
